What do you remember about going to the movie rental store?

I think i spent every Friday night as a kid riding my bike down to Cormies in Lake Charles and then Blockbuster.

The popcorn smell, the old school 80s VHS covers. It was a better day

I would always get a massive box of Goobers, a VHS, and a nintendo game to last the weekend.

The clock would start and you would have 2 days to beat the game. Had to leave it on pause all night, lol.

So many VHS tapes that the shelves sagged a bit.

Always asking the clerk if they had any returns in the back that weren't on shelves yet

Friday nights going with my best friend to get movies and video games for the sleep over. If it was a good night we got to rent the N64. Then we would go next door to Baskin Robbins for some ice cream. Life was simple back then.

The small room behind the curtain. I'd walk by it at least four times hoping to catch a VHS cover or two.

I remember finding a rented Sound Warehouse tape in the back floorboard of my car, taking it to them and finding out my buddy that left it there owed them $114.00 in late fees. He said he gave it to me to drop off on my way home. I'm sure I was wasted and didn't remember that.

Ended up splitting the fine with him to keep it from going on his credit report. When I argued with the Sound Warehouse manager about being able to buy the tape for less, he said they could have been renting it out every night while it was in my car.

Repeatedly renting Beverly Hills Ninja. I was about 8 and I liked the idea of a fat white ninja. Also the game section and renting video games. How I miss those days. What really chapped my arse though were those assholes who would not rewind their VHS returns. Had to hit rewind and leave the room so I wouldn't see any spoilers.

Pretty much just a 8-bit Nintendo, SNES or Genesis game every Friday night.

I used to ask and get movie posters that he was going to take down and replace with a newer one. I still have my Blue Chips movie poster in a cheap frame.

Having then pass the rented VHS on the other side of the sensors.

It was like the damn White House in there.

Every Friday looking at every single movie and most of the time leaving with The Rock. Asking the clerk if they had returns that weren't put out of movies that I wanted to rent.

The lines to checkout...always someone there completing and application for a rental card slowing things down.

Looking at the back of the cover to see if the movie had "N" for nudity.

The smell. It's so distinct in my memory, and Movie Gallery went out of business like seven years ago.

Hurrying to scan the New Releases along the walls because I was sure someone would take what I wanted from under me.

And then inconspicuously peering over the counter into the buggy of returned movies. I don't know why I didn't just ask them if they had what I was looking for back there

This. And calling ahead, them telling me no, and then showing up and asking again anyway. They always gave me the same look.
