Planet Hulk is another good one.

The New XMen by Grant Morrison was probably the greatest X-story ever told.

It really is OK to call them comic books.

There is a specific reason why I said graphic novel. Graphic Novel has a connotation to it that it is a complete story. I'm not looking for never-ending stories that are going to sap my wallet.

It's good. I didn't see it as the end all be all that I heard it was. I understand it may have been groundbreaking at the time to feature superheroes that way but by the time I got around to it, it didn't have the same effect. Also, it's rare to say this, but the movie's take on the twist at the end makes a lot more sense than the book's take.

This is all true. The movie had the better take on the ending, but they still fricked it up, and it didn't have the impact it could have.

Watchmen, of course, but I think you need to understand the comic book tropes they are playing off of before you read it. It's a criticism of an industry, and if you're unfamiliar with the thing being criticized, it will make no sense and lose a lot of its power.

Sandman is ambitious and has some of the most interesting character work.

Bone, I always go to bat for. I think it is one of the great American narratives, and its accessible to both adults and children.

Cerebus: Church and State. Cerebus is the greatest comic in history, and even its massive failures in later issues are pretty fascinating to read, but the book hit is peak in the two part Church and State storyline. Amazing work, all self-published. It might be the most "important" comic of the past 30 years.

Swamp Thing. Just cuz. Beautiful and deranged.

Maus. Gave comics respectability. It's a bit overrated, and I have a long rant about the Holocaust Entertainment Industry, but it gave comics literary respect.

The Dark Knight Returns. The best superhero comic ever written. And I don't even like Batman, honestly.

Hawkeye. An even better deconstruction of superheroes than Watchman. It's essentially about what it's like to be Hawkeye when he's off the job and just hanging out. It's fabulous. Pizza Dog for life.
