I know he is supposedly the most powerful being in the universe but what is it that he can actually do that sparks so much fear of him in the Marvel universe.

Thanos is a mutant member of the race of superhumans known as the Titanian Eternals. The character possesses abilities common to the Eternals, but amplified to a higher degree through a combination of his mutant Eternal heritage, bionic amplification, mysticism, and power bestowed by the abstract entity, Death. Demonstrating enormous superhuman strength, stamina, and durability, Thanos can absorb and project vast quantities of cosmic energy and is capable of telekinesis, telepathy and matter manipulation. Thanos is an accomplished hand-to-hand combatant, having been trained in the art of war on Titan.
Thanos is a genius in virtually all known fields of advanced science and has created technology far exceeding contemporary Earth science. He often employs a transportation chair capable of space flight, force field projection, teleportation, time travel and movement through alternate universes. Thanos is also a master strategist and uses several space vessels, at least 3 under the name of Sanctuary, as a base of operations.

Also, in reference to the Eternals.
The Eternals were created over a million years ago by the enigmatic Celestials, who arrived on Earth to perform genetic experiments on the nascent human race. For purposes unknown, they hoped to test the adaptability of the human gene, accelerating the evolution of a handful of subjects and gave them the genetic potential to mentally manipulate limited quantities of cosmic energy. Thus was born the race of Eternals. In a similar way, the Celestials also performed experiments that led to the creation of the Deviants, and they also implanted latent genetic material in other specimens that would one day permit benevolent mutations in human beings.

While Thanos is mad powerful, he has an absurd weakness.
His subconscious desire to lose.
His subconscious desire to lose.

If I had to guess, Ant Man or Starlord will crack some crude joke to catch him off guard allowing the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy ample time to create some super weapon with the infinity stones and destroy him for good.

Galactus is generally accepted as more powerful, but I doubt we ever see a film with him in it.

this is the problem with ensemble super hero flicks, to make it a fair fight you have to have these villains be almost omni potent.
it really pretty ridiculous.

It's because Galactus is more of a force than a villain. He has to consume worlds to stay....alive for a lack of a better word.
His heralds find him worlds to consume, and they are not always inhabited....but he can only wait so long before he must consume again. So inhabited worlds get wiped out too.

Its going to be a draw.
Thanos won't die, and yet he may kill an avenger or some characters, he won't kill them all.
Deadpool may play a bigger part.

Have to be honest, was going to troll a little but I'm just too damn tired.

To be fair it would be very Deadpool of him to jump into the MCU for no reason

He likes to party a lot and they usually catch him when he's hungover.
