Where do I start?
I know practically nothing.
I want to get into all the theories and what not. I hate being out the loop on these things.

4,5,6

wikipedia for 1 and 2

3 is worth a watch if you're still interested after all that.

Should I read the books? Do I have to?

no, the books aren't canon anymore since Disney bought the rights to the franchise

Here's everything that's considered canon:.

Just finished the Clone Wars Cartoon on Netflix and caught up on Rebels myself. Both have been really good. Re watching the movies as well atm

4 - Star Wars: A New Hope
5 - Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back
6 - Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

This is all you need to watch. The prequels suck and JJ Abrams thinks they suck so I don't think he will reference them in his movie. Rebels cartoon will probably have some reference simply because that is Disney; however, I am sure it wouldn't be required.

So, if I watch those, I should be good for the upcoming movie?
It'd drive me insane if I don't understand what's going on.

you MUST watch these

4 - Star Wars
5 - Empire Strikes Back
6 - Return of the Jedi

if you have time watch the prequels, but i dont think you will need to watch them to enjoy the new one, and they are terrible

Yeah you'll just need to watch 4-6 to understand everything up to 7.

Just watch all 6 movies, but go in this order : 4,5,1,2,3,6

I just finished 1,2,3 and will soon do 4,5,6. I still really enjoy the prequels. The CGI, particularly the lightsaber scenes, are absolutely amazing.

It's the cool thing to hate on the prequels, but if you aren't blinded by your feelings about the original trilogy going into it, you should enjoy the prequels.

Yeah, it's all perfectly choreographed and the characters clearly practiced the routine for hours in order to make it perfect.

Keep in mind OP, this is coming from a poster whose favorite movie is Man of Steel and thinks the Hobbit Trilogy is better than Lord of the Rings. Whatever he says about movies, typically go in the opposite direction.

I never once said the hobbit was better than lord of the rings nor do I even remotely think that. Hobbit trilogy was a lot of fun but not even close to top 10 for me while Lord of the Rings is top 5 (as one long movie). Yes, I love Man of Steel. My top 5 since my character has been slandered by false accusations:

1. There Will Be Blood
2. Lord of the Rings
3. The Godather parts 1 and 2 as one movie
4. Man of Steel
5. Braveheart

None of those movies have below 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The prequels are excellent. Ewan Mcg as Kenobi is probably the best acting in entire series. Watch those also. They don't really get the respect they deserve but are solid.

I'd just watch the original trilogy and maybe Episode 3. IMO the first two prequels are garbage.

Watch the Plinkett reviews and then tell me with a straight face that they're not garbage. They are trash and should have been made completely differently. Obi Wan and Anakin's relationship is toxic from the start and Anakin butchers children on a whim. It completely failed as a prequel.

People that get caught up in all the plot problems are missing the point. They are action movies. Its not Star Trek. Some of the action sequences in the prequels are really amazing.
