Yeah, I agree that Up probably should have gotten Best Picture that year. Only Basterds will be as very positively remembered in a few decades as a nominee.

The "what is the best Pixar flick" is an ongoing debate. Toy story is one of the few films in the history of film to pull off a perfect trilogy, and it was the exact right timing through the years for me so it's hard to top that. Finding Nemo is on par with any of the toy story's for me too. After that it's hard to rank em.
My two buddies have the Pixar films like 1. Up
2. Anything else.
Up has you crying in the first 20 minutes which is awesomely impressive. But the "villain" drops it down a little bit. He was pretty weak. But their argument is that once you find your true love you look at it different. Maybe so.

Wall-e is my personal favorite, with Toy Story 3 and Up tied for second.

I thought it was a good movie in all the technical ways but I was bored and wished it was funnier.

Have you seen "Mary and Max" (it's on Netflix Instant)? Animated movie from the same year that I think was just as good as Up.

Wall-E may be my favorite too (though I really love Nemo). The top of my Pixar list is very cluttered.
Also, I do agree that the villain in Up was fairly weak, but the movie is incredible. Also, everyone always talks about how sad the opening montage is, but I disagree. I guess it's a little bit sad that they never made it to Paradise Falls, but overall it makes me happy to see two people fall in love and spend pretty much the rest of their lives together. That's a great thing IMO.
But I agree that the whole montage scene is beautiful. Kinda like "When She Loved Me: from Toy Story 2. Pixar is just fantastic.

Aside from Syndrome and Lotso, Pixar hasn't really made many good villains. The standard Pixar film usually brings up the main antagonist near the very beginning of the story, and then they drop him for about half the movie in order to develop the struggle of our protagonist, which pretty much has nothing to do with the antagonist. Once we meet the villain, the hero then overcomes his failures and is then ready to take out. The villain. Pixar films are typically man vs himself or man vs nature rather than man vs man.

I can agree with that. Though I do think Hopper from AB'sL is a solid villain.
I likely rank A Bug's Life higher than most people in their Pixar rankings.

I guess. But "happily ever after" is basically what they had. They lived the rest of her (and almost all of his) life together. Maybe it's more of a happy-sad than a depressing sad.
I guess the "not being able to have kids" thing is kinda sad though.
