Instead of tangible violence, Littlefinger uses his cunning and treachery as a way to get what he wants and make his enemies suffer. Look at what he did to Ros for example. He found out she was working for Varys and gave her up to Joffrey for target practice. He did murder Lysa Arryn, but only after manipulating her into doing exactly what he wanted. Littlefinger doesn't put up a front though, people know exactly who he is and what he's all about. He even told Ned in the beginning that Ned was wise not to trust him.

So yes, I believe Littlefinger is definitely an antagonist who, if one could argue anything positive about him, maybe the only thing would be that he truly loved Catelyn and was willing to die for her by facing Brandon Stark, who was far superior to him in combat. I think he is transferring his love of Catelyn onto Sansa, so hopefully he will protect her and not let her fall into Ramsay's hands.

I think it could be said that Ned and Catelyn loved each other, even though they initially married to unite their Houses.

I'd say they're more dutiful to one another than loved one another. She never mourned for Ned in the same way she mourned for her children.

Easily

1. Theon for getting his dick get cut off
2a. Sansa for all believing all of her family is dead and marrying a psycho and trusting another
2b. Margaery for not getting enough naked screen time as she deserves.

Show Littlefinger: Yes

Book Littlefinger: Absolutely not.

People in the books simply think of Littlefinger as an affable helpful little man who is entirely harmless. In truth, LF is an absolute monster behind closed doors, made the realm bleed, destroyed Houses Stark and Tully, and seeks to burn the highborn system into the ground. There is only one person who sees LF for what he truly is and that is Tyrion (and maybe Varys). GRRM himself says that the character that is most different from his book version in the show is Littlefinger and says he can't see why someone hasn't killed him off in the show yet.

I really don't think Littlefinger understands love; all Littlefinger understands is obsession, and I think he mistakes the two. Cat was nothing more than a prize to Littlefinger, the ultimate prize. When he couldn't have her, he proceeded to plot destroying the very system that kept his prize from him. But the second he lays eyes on Sansa, his game plan changed. He was going to get his mini-Cat again, just to burn down everything Cat and the Starks held dear.

Catelyn is pretty bad:
-in love with Brandon Stark...mad king kills him
-must marry Ned...
-Ned comes home with a bastard
-wishes death on the bastard and the bastard gets deathly sick
-wishes she could save the bastard and treat him like any other son. Jon lives, but she can't get over Ned's infidelity.
-Bran is pushed out window and crippled
-Ned and the girls leave for the capital and she never sees them again
-Ned is executed, Arya missing/possibly dead, Sansa in the hands of the enemy, Bran and Rickon were killed by Theon
-releases the Kingslayer to save Arya and Sansa pissing off the only thing she has left: her son Robb
-sees Robb die right in front of her
-everything she ever loved gone and she snaps...then her throat is slit
-plus other stuff the show didn't go into

Viserys was a pretty unfortunate character.
-basically his entire dynasty was killed
-is rightful ruler of the 7 kingdoms yet in exile
-in hiding for years having to beg people to house/feed him
-dragged around by a dothraki horde
-getting upstaged by your younger sister
-got a molten gold crown

Jaime has it pretty bad as well:
-wants Cersei more than anything
-Cersei lives in Kings Landing, he lives in Casterly Rock
-gets appointed kingsguard...can be closer to cersei
-Tywin moves Cersei back to Casterly Rock, he now lives in Kings Landing
-saves the realm from the mad king & is reviled by all as the Kingslayer and not given due for his deed
-forced to hear the fat, drunk Robert beat and frick his true love for years
-with Robert dead, can finally spend more time around Cersei...forced into War
-captured and living in slop for a year
-trumped around by a ugly woman who could kick his arse(at least when handcuffed)
-gets his sword hand chopped off (which makes him pretty useless)
-his son died, his father died, his best friend/brother hates him
-still can't be with Cersei

Also, Bran Stark, paralyzed in a world without wheelchairs, deserves a mention.

Don't think he gives two shits about that. The only person who missed Joffrey was Cersei.

This right here. I'd go through Tyrion's experience ten times over if it meant I could keep my junk, not sleep with the dogs or be Ramsay's little eunuch bitch.

Theon had his favorite toy taken from him.

He was raised by his family's sworn enemy.

His family has abandoned him.

He's humiliated at every turn.

Theon wins. Not close.

True, Theon definitely has a legitimate claim for being the most misfortunate character, because it is living Hell what Ramsay has put him through.

Theon and Tyrion share the misfortune of being rejected and unloved by their fathers. What Theon did in taking over Winterfell and commiting murder, I believe he did that primarily to gain his father's approval. I hope that Theon can escape Ramsay's clutches, but obviously he will never be the same person. That's part of what makes Ramsay the most evil. Theon was troubled, yet he was sane and displayed a keen sense of pride and arrogance. Ramsay transformed him into a broken man whose mind and body had been traumatized so much that Theon didn't even know who he was anymore.

So I'll agree, Theon is definitely up there for most tragic character, and others have mentioned Sansa, Arya, Catelyn, etc., they have had their share as well.

In this order imo:

Theon
Sansa
Tyrion

I hated Catelyn Stark. It seems like every decision the Starks made were the wrong ones, starting with Ned taking the job as hand of the King. It went all down hill from there.

Not a book reader, but I got the feeling Varys made a deal with Jorah to kidnap Tyrion. Tyrion being a pain in the arse with the drinking/brothels. Varys was taking him to Dany as well

Didn't Cat pressure him into it? She's the worst.

Actually Cat did everything she could to stop Ned from becoming Hand.

But everything else she did was fricking awful

Theon deserves everything that's happened to him (mainly for murdering the 2 kids to pose as Bran and Rickon's corpses).

I'm pretty sure Ned did not want to take it.

eta: Here's the synopsis of the chapter on AWOIAF:

quote:

The couple discuss King Robert's offer, which Ned intends to refuse. Catelyn insists that he must accept so as not to offend the king, which might put them all in danger. While Catelyn contemplates the omen of the direwolf killed by a stag, Ned wishes his brother Brandon had lived to be Lord of Winterfell instead.

...They receive the message from Lysa...

Catelyn takes the message apprehensively. It is from her sister Lysa and written in a secret language only the two sisters share. Catelyn immediately burns the message after reading it, but explains to Ned that the message claims Jon Arryn was murdered by Queen Cersei and her family. Catelyn insists that now Ned must be the Hand of the King, to find the truth behind Lysa's accusations. Maester Luwin agrees with Catelyn, pointing out that the Hand's authority will help determine the truth and protect Lysa and her son. Ned reminds them both that his father went south once at the summons of a king and never returned. Luwin replies that that was a different time and a different king. Catelyn insist that if Ned truly loves King Robert like a brother, he will not leave him to face the Lannisters on his own.
