I'm not saying they always are but in general, they are just a coverup for poor story telling.

All art is manipulative on some level and all art is also a cover-up for poor story telling. It speaks volumes that the greatest stories in human history are the ones with no pictures to pull at our emotional heart strings and manipulate us into feelings certain ways.

But then on the other hand, there are some stories that are only visuals, and they too are manipulative and conceal bad story telling. One need look no further than ancient cave paintings or even Dan Brown to witness the power of manipulations and pictures and words. These are the tools that great men use to convey ideas and manipulate and story tell. Truly.

But many times there are too few words, or too many manipulations, or not enough story telling, or perhaps too much? Must these be considered as well? I think the obvious answer is emphatically "yes!" For without this answer how can we truly know what is and isn't good manipulation or story telling?
Truly.
Truly.

I hate any OP that ends with "Discuss".

Twist endings manipulate by distracting the viewer from a bad story? Maybe sometimes but you could say the same for humor, special effects, gore, sex...

Great examples and evidence to back up your statement there.

So what? We watch/listen/read to have our minds and emotions manipulated. Twists aren't inherently bad, they just need to be done well. When you watch a movie with a big twist that was well done like The 6th Sense or Book of Eli, as soon as you find out the twist you play back the entire movie in your mind and have your mind blown where each point in the movie this new information provides a completely different take on the scene.
You want to hide information from the audience, fine, come up with a good reason to hide that information from us and make sure the main character is in the dark along with us.

How would you describe any art, good or bad, if not manipulative? Manipulation is like the cornerstone of art. An artist manipulates words, sights, and sounds to make "art" and good art in turn manipulates the viewer into experiencing an emotion. I've mostly heard pretentious writing types who are jaded about their lackluster "writing careers" say this same type of thing for years about any plot driven story.
