I liked him because I was watching a bad arse mafia show and he was the bad arse. I always felt like Tony secretly felt trapped in his life and didn't want to be what he was so I felt empathy for him.

I assume you're only in season one judging by your comments. If you are, I assure you your feelings will change over time. Sure, he's an immature, selfish brute most of the time, but he also has a large soft side and compassion for others which causes many him many issues along the way as the boss. If you're deeper than season one and still feel that way then, to each his own. Personally, I greatly prefer Gandolfini's Tony Soprano to Buscemi's Nucky Thompson in terms of likeability.

I disagree with that notion entirely.

No I finished it years ago. Rewatching it lately. I didn't start to hate tony until season 4 on the first go round

ETA: that's not to say he doesn't have any redeeming qualities just overall he's an ahole psychopath

I always liked Tony... until

(spoiler)

He killed Christopher. From that moment until the finale I hated his guts. It's been explained to me why he needed to do it, but this can be my irrational issue

Well, he loves his family somewhat, and he has a certain loyalty to his friends. But none of that gets in the way of being a murderous thug. He'd probably draw the line at killing his wife or one of his kids, but I don't much other evidence of scruples in his personality.

Chris had to die. He was spiraling out of control and was going to destroy everyone around him. Tony had to take him out of his misery.

That's almost to the letter of the explanation I received. Objectively, it makes perfect sense. In my head, Tony went further than he ever had and became an unredeemable monster. I got almost physically ill when I first saw it and just angry on second time through the show.

Tony was a psychopath. But for some reason I never came to see have as completely evil. Unlike Walter White who has completely "broken bad" as the title of the show would imply. Walter is now a complete piece of shite and I feel no sympathy for him.

(Spoiler)

Christopher was lucky he lived as long as he did. Tony wanted him dead the moment Christopher threatened him for putting a move on Adriana. Things only got worse when Tony saw the movie that Christopher helped write, which portrayed the main character as a womanizing boss. (Even though Tony didn't technically hook up with Adriana).

Christopher was in a sense the son that Tony never had with Anthony, which made his murder a little fcked up but they shared some good moments together. But as someone said earlier, it had to be done. He had caused Tony too much grief with his drug addiction. They weren't even blood related. It was just a matter of time and the perfect opportunity for Tony after the car accident. I actually gained even more respect for Tony after he killed him.

The most likeable character to me was Pauly, and I was a little disappointed a Russian didn't show up in the finally to kill him at 3:00, that would have made his character perfect in my mind.

I watched the Soprano's on VHS a while ago. I never did finish the series. I grew tired of the classic Italian mobster. I liked the Departed more than I probably of should because it was Irish mobsters.

It's on my bucket list, and yes it was the first couple of seasons on VHS in the early 2000's.

yeah, I loved the Russian episode. I'm assuming he died in the woods but that was so damn funny. But as far as most likeable, how can you not like Bobby? Or Silvio?

Probably correct. Like a lot of "bad guys" or "antiheroes" in fiction, he has his vulnerable moments where we sympathize with the guy. We even understand why he does what he does. But make no mistake about it, Tony Soprano was a thug.

I used to watch the show and I enjoyed it. But, over time, I started to hate that Italian subculture and thought how ironic it is that they play the "family" card but not only do so many of them hate each other, they would kill each other for a few dollars more.

I hated that little fricker with a passion. What a worthless slug.

As the son of a mob boss, he could have done almost anything he wanted. Instead, he was nothing but a whining, crying little bitch.
