Tom Hanks is an above average actor, but a fantastic movie star.
Much like John Wayne, you don't forget it's Tom Hanks in his prolific roles. Off hand, do you know Tom Hank's character in Saving Private Ryan?

No mention of Michael Caine? He's good but I dont remember a role he's taken that's different from his usual schtik for 10'or 15 years

Well, Michael Caine is 82 years old so he's not going to be playing a wide variety of roles. But yeah, he's pretty much become a white Morgan Freeman in recent movies.
