Gotta be Magnolia right? or Jerry Maguire

Amazing a guy on that level has never won and rarely been nominated for an Oscar.

Born on the Fourth of July. He wins the Oscar if not for Daniel Day-Lewis giving, arguably, the best performance of his career for My Left Foot.

Probably. I think the next would be Collateral. Jerry Maguire and Rain Main are close behind. A Few Good Men and Eyes Wide Shut would probably be next in line for me. He was excellent, young, in Taps and in a smaller, comic role in Tropic Thunder. Color of Money, Top Gun and Minority Report would round out what I consider to be his A grade (or near A grade) performances. (ETA: Maybe Born on the Fourth of July an honorable mention here - I just can't stand the film, the guy it was based on or the character.)

The little guy catches a lot of grief because he's weird and strangely high up in a weird cult. He's also done a lot of crap films or phoned performances in (or, worse, didn't understand/couldn't deliver). But, at the top end, he has a nice selection of performances of which he can be proud.

I would say that or Eyes Wide Shut. I like him but he seems to be one of those actors who just plays himself. Worked like a charm in Edge of Tomorrow, he was great for that movie.

Collateral and Last Samurai are two of my favorite movies ever.

He's an odd guy and strangely, I pity him. I don't know how bright he is. He's done some dumb stuff and probably hurt some people (I don't follow celebrity shite) so I don't mind any comeuppance he deserves but I think there's an earnest kinda honesty to his work that I like. I don't know if I explained that correctly or if that made sense.

I like most of his work but Magnolia runs him through all emotions and he handled it flawlessly.

"Respect the cock!"

"Quietly judging you."

"Don't go away, you fricking a-hole, don't go away. Don't go away, you fricking a-hole, don't go away! Don't go away you fricking a-hole!"

"I will drop-kick those frickin' dogs if they come near me."

Yeah agreed, I thought Magnolia because of the total uniqueness of that character. I can't remember ever seeing that sleazy motivational speaker type part done that well. Plus how Anderson shot those scenes really elevated it.

He was really fantastic in Tropic Thunder. I think he's a great actor, and doesn't get the accolades he deserves.

Ken Watanabe playing Katsumoto blew me away in that movie.

Except for RainMan, I cannot stand Mr. Cruise and ANY role he is in. Refuse to even watch any movie he is in. Really no "acting". Same character over and over and over again.

Most of his performances are the kid from Risky Business as a grownup, IYAM.

Same here.

Interesting points except to add that he's actually helped people irl before. I recall him rescuing people stranded on a burning boat or something and also helping a fan at an event that was getting crushed against a barricade.

Do yourself a favor and download The Nerdist podcast with Cruise. It's an interesting interview, and I think Chris did a fantastic job. Tom is a guy that loves what he does completely, and that probably puts people off. But he's put in a lot of time learning about the craft of making movies and he seems to be the quintessential professional when it comes to doing so.

And his best for me was Jerry Macguire. Fantastic movie and performance.

Oddly enough, he sometimes annoys me and I am a big fan of the Reacher books and thought he was all wrong for it but I liked the movie alright.

I figure the movie probably wouldn't have been made without his influence.

If he's only doing one every 4 years there are going to be a lot of books left on the table. I don't think he can be Reacher at 70 even if he is well preserved.
