There were 600 original scripted shows airing on broadcast, cable and streaming in 2022 alone. That it was already hard enough to list the 50 best shows of last year is a luxury problem. We’re living through the greatest era of television content ever, and that’s fantastic, but it makes listing very challenging. It’s likely that we excluded at least five of your favorite shows ever. We apologize.

We had to start with parameters. We agreed that any show that had episodes airing after Dec. 31, 1999, was eligible for consideration, even if that show first premiered in the 20th century. That meant, for example, that The Sopranos was eligible, but only for the five seasons that aired from 2000 on. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was eligible, but it lost three and a half seasons. You get the idea.

The next parameter was harder to set and entailed more bickering. We decided that while the volume of available international television has expanded exponentially in the streaming era, it’s hard to feel like we’ve seen a representative output of, say, the Korean TV industry. To avoid claiming authority based on such a limited sample, we decided to restrict the list to English-language options. (That said, we collectively urge everybody to watch HBO’s My Brilliant Friend.)

Bojack Horseman and other shite like Girls are on here yet Breaking Bad isn’t?

They could at least PRETEND to be serious.

If it read:

5. Better Call Saul
4. The Wire
3. Breaking Bad
2. Sopranos
1. Mad Men

I don't think there'd be much beef.

I see THR needed clicks and engagement so they trotted this list out there to get the interwebs buzzing

Nothing before 1/1/2000 is eligible. Seinfeld ended in 1998.

Good show but you can't put that on the list with less than 20 total episodes.

I would think you would need 5+ seasons to be here

Sorry for the downvote. I usually don't kill the messenger, but that list is terrible.
Where is:

The Wire
Breaking Bad
Justified
Game of Thrones
The Americans
Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

Band of Brothers & Chernobyl were just one season, but both were great seasons.

Hell, Deadwood isn't top 10 but better than some of that.

ETA: It let me give you an upvote, so we're back even.

Why would Seinfeld make this list? That’s like behind mad George Washington isn’t on a list of the world’s greatest painters.

Freaks and Geeks is over ranked (though a very good show). Girls at 8 is the obvious clickbait choice.

Glad to see the Americans at 12.
Game of Thrones is hard to rank, and I think they did as well as they could.

Broad City was definitely over ranked. Interesting to see it got ranked while Key and Peele didn’t.
