Star Trek : Axnar

They have alreayd made a prelude to the movie

Scene from the movie

quote:

Axanar is the first fully-professional, independent Star Trek film. While some may call it a "fan film" as we are not licensed by CBS, Axanar has professionals working in front and behind the camera, with a fully-professional crew--many of whom have worked on Star Trek itself--who ensure Axanar will be the quality of Star Trek that all fans want to see.

For you, the Star Trek fan, Axanar is a return to the type of Star Trek all of us grew up on, with a hopeful future where mankind works with other races to explore the stars, via storytelling that is positive and teaches us about ourselves. Axanar feels like Star Trek because it is made by two of the biggest Star Trek fans in the world, Alec Peters and Robert Burnett. Alec was the executive producer/co-writer of Prelude to Axanar, and Rob wrote & directed Free Enterprise.

Candyman plays the Admiral.

Looking to raise $960,000 total, they have $290k.

So are these just proof of concept pilots hoping to get the studio to bite? Surely they'd get shut down by legal if they ever tried to air them.

Honestly, mixed. I like crowd funding fan films and do it now and then.

This is anything but a fan film. And my biggest problem is they are marketing like one.

I attended one of their panels at san diego comicon this year and honestly it really turned me off to the production. There was a creepy hollywood arrogance to the whole thing...they expect to raise all this money. I was listening to one of the producers talk to a friend waiting for it to start...and really the guy was just smug all the way around.

Further, a lot of their money is going into a studio they have "rented" out and intend to run a film school from after they are done with their "fan film". All on the backs of their donors.

While I really like what I see from the production itself...(I tossed in 30 bucks last year to their kickstarter)...I am now taking a wait and see to any future contributions.

Paramount and CBS have told fan films more then once as long as they don't try to profit from the Star Trek brand they will not shut them down.

Star Trek Continues had a copyright issue earlier in the year and had an episode pulled from youtube until it was corrected (turned out it was a mistake).

There are always risks and challenges when making a film - actors dropping out, locations and/or sets not being available, unforeseen costs, equipment trouble, inclement weather, etc. In addition, "Star Trek" is a licensed property of CBS and so they have the final say in any Star Trek venture. However, the Axanar team has dealt with CBS and knows the landscape which must be navigated. Every member of the Axanar team is also a professional, and has proven his or her skills on other projects and films.

I saw the "trailer" some time ago. While impressed at the level of actor they were able to attract, they are doing this in the style of the more recent fan films or fan episodes (and some of those, Of Gods and Men, for example, got actual Trek Alumni to reprise their roles), without actually being a fan film.

Still more "Star Trek" than anything the Hollywood studios are liable to produce in my lifetime, but, that pendulum, she keeps on swinging.

The copyright holders appear to have moved on - away from space exploration, our place in the universe, contemplative, thoughtful science fiction storytelling to the modern blockbuster model - and that's fine.

However, many original fans like this stuff with a "throwback" feel, I have to admit, myself included.

I love the old universe, I agree that Trek should be about the science, not war battle war then another battle.

I know thats a reason you don't like the new movies.
I really wanted Enterprise to last longer, they wet nuts with time travel and killed it for me. I loved that early exploration angle though.

I do like TNG better than TOS, but only because I saw TNG first.
TOS is amazing when you look back on it.
I just watched my first episode of "continues" the Mirror Universe one, and I liked it. I'm a sucker for Mirror Universe and Enterprise had the best MU storyline.
This one for a fan episode was good as well. Nice continuation of a classic episode.
