I know it's pretty well acclaimed so I checked it out for the first time yesterday. It was alright, pretty good, but no real desire to see again. I'm really hit or miss with Cusak, but I kinda liked him in this one. Although about halfway through it occured to me this character was a dead ringer for Ted Mosby.

I only have one real major gripe with it. Catherine zeta jones just so happens to call him out of the blue after years of not speaking, JUST as JC is reconnecting with his top 5. What a coincidence. Then she's like "my last bf is trying to talk about our past, you aren't doing that are you?" So he goes to this dinner party and everyone has a good time, then he brings up the past and she's like "I KNEW you were going to do this!" ummm bitch, YOU called HIM. Not the other way around. You brought this on.

But anyways...I guess overall I just thought it was alright. I think I remember it's someone on the board's favorite movie (maybe SFP? Idk).

You missed the part where he called her and left a voicemail. She calls him back.

Yea man, he definitely calls her. I think she even makes a comment about it when she calls.

One of my favorite Cusack films and a movie I've watched a few dozen times.

The fantasy scene where they throw the air conditioning unit on Tim Robbins's head is hilarious.

I love this movie, and it hits a little too close to home. Two gripes, both of them minor, but what the hell...

ONE. They cut my two favorite scenes from the book. One is actually referenced in the film, as he gets the call to go buy some records from someone, but they never follow up on it. In the book, it's a bitter ex-wife selling off her husband's pristine collection full of impossible to find records for a total of 10 bucks. He can't do it to another record collector, and walks out with only one record. Also, and more critically, he goes to a dinner party after reconciling with his girlfriend with two of her friends. They are cool people and he enjoys their company. She gets him to look at their record collection, and it is truly awful. He decides that it is more important what you're like, not what you like. Maybe it's too on the nose, but I liked his growth.

TWO. Green Day's two primary influences are not the Ramones and Stiff Little Fingers. Look, I love Stiff Little Fingers, too. And 78 RPM is great f'n song, as is Alternative Ulster. But geez Tom, if you're such a music dork, you're not going to give credit to an Irish band popular into the UK to the San Francisco punk scene. This is where the book clearly shows it was written by a Brit. American punk, particularly at Green Day's formation, was fiercely nationalistic, and almost completely rejected UK punk. Their second major influence was Husker Du, as evidenced by the fact American Idiot is a near carbon copy of Zen Arcade's story.

Like I said, it hit too close to home.

And would it f'n KILL them to at least mention Chicago's pretty amazing local music scene? He does wear a Pigface t-shirt at one point, but that's it. Couldn't put Big Black on the soundtrack, guys? What? Was Naked Raygun's price too high?

I showed my wife the last scene where Rob was explaining why he wanted to get married. I told her "this helped me grow up".

He almost stole the movie. I still waver between this and Tropic Thunder for my favorite JB. He's not really a great actor - a poor man's PSH - but, when he shines, he shines, no question.

"It's so violent and funny. And the soundtrack kicks #$%$ing arse."

One of my favorites. I identify a lot with Rob for the good and bad sometimes. Like the poster above said, it's a film that i can say helped me grow up a bit.

It feels both dated and timeless at the same time, but that's kind of the point. It's like really good music. You can still listen to it, but you know that it's the product of a very specific moment.

I actually saw it for the first time like 2 months ago. I liked it it's kinda of a rom-com for guys who don't like rom-coms.

I'm a fan of director Stephen Frears and I knew I was in for a treat when the movie started off with some 13th Floor Elevators rocking!

And to make your day better... here's the deleted scene of them following up on it with a still quite attractive Beverly D'Angelo. Not sure about your second mentioned scene, don't think that one was included on the DVD.

Also Jack Black was just perfect in this movie. Tour de force.

It's probably my 2nd favorite Cusack movie. Behind Grosse Pointe Blank.

And it's definitely relatable from a love life/relationship standpoint.
