Just watched The Whale and it got me investigating his catalog after being a long time huge fan of Requiem For A Dream.
Pretty diverse and interesting filmography.
What does the board think of him as a director?

Overall pretty solid director. The Wrestler is fantastic. I really liked Pi as well.

He takes massive swings. sometimes they hit, sometimes they dont.
but he has talent for sure.

There’s a scene in most of his movies that’s so intense you’re like oh yeah it’s a Darren movie
Requiem especially
The whale also had one and I think you know of what I’m referring to

He was making A24 movies before A24 was a thing

Almost exactly this. I thought Requiem was terrible, but that The Fountain was a nearly-perfect mix of high-art and watchability.
The Wrestler - truly great.
Black Swan - very solid.
Mother! - eh, still not sure

I appreciate all of the directors who are always doing something different and have been able to carve out their own niche and get these interesting movies made, especially against the current of studios only wanting to make safe "blockbuster" type movies. Aronofsky, Terrence Malick, Wes Anderson, Guillermo del Toro, etc., I love that these guys get to make films.
My almost close-encounter with Darren Aronofsky:
Aronofsky was in high school at the time. In 1986 (as a college student) I took the exact same course in Kenya, studying the same research he did in 1985. If he had switched up his two SFS courses, or if I had gone one year earlier, I could have said that I met him as a high school kid halfway across the world!

From wiki: During his youth, Aronofsky trained as a field biologist with The School for Field Studies in Kenya in 1985 and Alaska in 1986. He attended school in Kenya to pursue an interest in learning about ungulates. He later said that the School for Field Studies "changed the way [he] perceived the world".
