Talk about a feel good movie of the year….
Movie is bleak and depressing as frick.

I knew either Dunst or Baby Photographer was going to die. Just wasn’t sure who. Baby photographer was being dumb at the end but also Dunst was fricking up to.

Movie feels like someone played Last of Us and said “hey, what if we change u the formula a bit.”

I mean, obviously a lot of great performances. Plemons… he’s a great actor. I haven’t seen him ever feel that visceral. Feels like he really turned it on.

But main takeaway is man, just depressing movie. And you’ve used up all your emotions by the time you get to the final 20 minutes so you are just. Kinda burnt out. That may have been intentional

I liked it

To see the warfare from that perspective was a nice change of pace

Explosive third act with some jump scare gunshots mixed in

Doubt I ever rewatch it

Was it more from a journalist perspective and less action sequences like we see in the trailer or a mix of both? A lot of people are going in expecting to see large battle scenes like in an action movie. Couldn't really tell from the trailers.

Mostly action scenes seen through the lenses of a war photo journalist. The final scene is the only large battle scene and even that is relatively scaled down

Trailers are very misleading, the specifics of the war is at best a sub plot, and for the most part not much of the plot at all

There’s maybe 10 lines in the movie that talk directly about actual things that lead to the war or happened during it

I jumped like a bitch to those in Imax

The score and the way it sets up those scenes at times has an almost horror movie feel to it, it’s incredibly effective in putting you into those very intimate war scenes while feeling out of place, basically as the audience, we are another photo journalist joining them on this insane road trip and seeing this war we don’t really understand

This is more what war does to people.

I think we so often look at war torn places of the world and see these images and think “that couldn’t happen here. We aren’t barbaric like that”

And this movie shows you exactly what it’d look like for those things to happen here. In this movie, literally through the lens of a war photographer. And I think it does a pretty good job of that

The first half or so of the movie will truly test your patience.

Its a left wing fetish. It plays out exactly how the women on the view view America.

I have not seen it yet but most of the negative reviews seems to be from left leaning viewers who are pissed its so apolitical.

He’s full of shite/delusional

There’s one scene in which a bad guy, Jessie Plemons, has a meltdown and acts evil towards people he doesn’t consider Americans. In this world where the Texas/California alliance are hinted at being the good guys. And the east coast is “America” and a dictatorship.

Within context of the movie, that makes sense. As the movie points out, he’s part of some awful shite that he doesn’t want anyone seeing. And he probably knows that if this shite gets out, he’s up for war crimes with America surrendering

That’s it.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe they even state who Jesse Plemmons character is fighting for officially

He’s in Army clothes but both sides were shown using standard army gear

I think it’s implied by the characters that they assume he’s with the president but not outwardly stated. It’s very clear that Plemmons character isn’t operating under any sort of official order or even for the “cause”- he’s sort of free lancing his own terror there with the power he has

I think his reaction when erring says he’s from Florida, and Floridian weird involvement, he’s on the American side.

I think Plemons is just someone who’s beat down looking to lash out in any way possible. Maybe he was responsible for the massacre, maybe not. But it’s a mess he has to answer to himself about and that’s why he was so brutal

A true civil war in America would be depressing as frick. The morons who are always foaming at the mouth for some kind of armed conflict in this country should think about that.

I think the hints are pretty strong! The president is portrayed as a Trump-like figure because:

1. Three-term president
2. FBI was disbanded
3. "Journalists are shot on sight."

"Three-term president" alone is a big enough constitutional crisis that we could envision devolving into a war. The only way a civil war could actualy happen is if the military fractures, and this is one way that could happen. The military is obligated to follow the law, not be loyal to the president, so even if the Supreme Court makes an unlawful ruling allowing a third term without a legal change in the constitution, some generals could decide to ignore the "third-term president."

Is shooting journalist an official trump policy that I missed?

Alex Garland has said the President is a fascist. Whatever that means. Not sure if he’s implying it to be Trump nor will he say imo.

LINK

I think part of the point of the movie is to show how blurred everything can get in these situations. Some people don’t know what theyre fighting for in the long run.
