A couple said it was funniest they'd seen in a while, a couple said it was the funniest they'd seen in a long time. Others said it was one of the funniest ever (I have legitimately not laughed more in a movie than This is the End; One of the funniest movies I've seen).

Name a better comedy in the last 3 years? The only one I can think of is Scott Pilgrim.

I think you have to respect that when you put such an all-star comedic cast together.

Agreed, though I could have done more Jason Segal and less Seth Rogen. It also doesn't help that I think Danny McBride is a no-talent arse clown, but you know, I knew that going in. He still had me laughing despite my rather low opinion of him. That, too, should say something for the movie.

In the last 5 years, as was said above, Harold and Kumar Escape from GITMO.

In the last 3 years, 21 Jump Street. Easily.

And Danny McBride's character in the film is a no-talent arse clown. I think he did that really well, and was all-in-all probably my favorite part of the film.

No. That film had its scenes, and Rob Cordry was an absolute scene steeler, but by no means is it better than this.

That one slightly slipped my mind, but I still think this is better. It's a decent debate on which movie was better.

Comedies are very hard to debate, imo, and I largely started this thread to (a) rile some people, and (b) give my opinion on This is the End, but this is becoming a more serious discussion so I'll give a more serious response.

Harold & Kumar EFGB is one of the funniest movies I'VE EVER SEEN. Yes, I am using that line. It is a favorite of mine. That may have to do with the fact that it reminds me of the first time I saw during which I was intoxicated with some friends of mine I don't see too often. Nevertheless, it is a favorite of mine. My humor slides more that direction.

21 Jump Street did what This is the End wanted to do better than This is the End did, and it didn't even try. 21 Jump Street had the irreverence, the improvisation, that This is the End tried so hard for, but it also had a solid back story and was a complete film. It's cameos were equally humorous and unexpected. To me, 21 Jump Street blew This is the End out of the water, but again, sense of humor is tough to really nail down. At the end of it, I think if you judge a movie for the story it tells rather than how much you laughed, that's the best way to judge it. This is the End's story was very boring. The way they told it was funny. If that makes any sense.

Ummm, I'd say it probably doesn't cross my top 100 of funniest movies I've ever seen. The only parts I really laughed was when Rob Cordry was doing racist stuff. The original was far superior to it in every category imaginable.

This is the End did not want to be 21 Jump Street. You just clearly didn't get the purpose of this film. It wasn't to tell a story, but more to exaggerate their real life friendships and put it to it's utmost limits. The apocalypse isn't really the story of This is the End, just the backdrop. Pretty much all the characters' real problems are dealing with each others' bullshite and their own narcissistic egos. As the end of the film shows, if they just conquered this at the beginning of the film, then they would have been fine.

O no, I got the purpose of the story. Hell, they basically said that was the purpose in all the interviews. It just felt like the plot line was actually an anchor weighing the film down.

Jonah Hill sums up the purpose of the story in one scene when he's talking to Seth Rogen about how Jay Baruchel doesn't like not fitting in with Seth's L.A. friends and feels like an outsider. In that one scene, you understand pretty well the notion that the social dynamics between characters are an important part of the movie.

But playing exaggerated versions of themselves doesn't make the movie good. It leads to humorous moments. But it doesn't make it good.

I was stretching with this, I admit. I meant more that 21 Jump Street accomplished the irreverence and improvisation that This is the End appeared to want to do with much more success.

Again, to each his own and I admitted that I may have a bias toward it not related to the movie. There are just so many scenes in HKEFGB that I loved. I didn't stop laughing the entire time ("You ever try farming not high? It's boring as shite!" ) It sounds like several people had similar reactions to This is the End.
