Documentary -
Dec 9 2019 eruption of Whakaari volcano off the coast of New Zealand.

2 tour boats had gone to the island when it erupted. One boatload had just left, while the tourists on the 2nd were just heading back to the boat. 21 either died on the island or from their injuries. Not overly graphic, but there were some disturbing stories.

Aside from the tragic loss and the awesome yet deadly forces of nature, there's a window into the heartless nature of the bureaucratic / gov culture that exists in New Zealand. Just terrible.

Not gonna lie…I’m not dumb enough to tour an active volcano, spewing endless amounts of steam, located 20 miles offshore.

I watched this documentary this morning. While what happened was tragic, at some point common sense needs to prevail.

That eruption was wild to see on film. Its hard for one to even imagine experiencing that in person and up close.

That island looks badass though.

Such a great documentary, eruptions and blizzards are so incredibly powerful, fast, and all-encompassing

I will say the husband of the couple who was like “if I’d known the risks, no way would I have done this”. GTFO, you didn’t know an active volcano could erupt?

We watched this the other night, pretty tragic story. Wouldn't have been us, though, people nowadays have been conditioned to ignore actual signs of danger. Sulfur discolored rocks, a lake of acid, hot bubbling earth, venting steam, black smoke, etc., etc. The wife and I would have never set foot on an active volcano island, we've been to Pompeii. Don't mess with nature, you might get Krakatoa-ed.

I watched and it was well done. Yes very tragic. I believe they said it erupts every 3 years and they decided to go on the island on year 3?? That wasn’t very smart. I also don’t get what’s so appealing about being so close to a volcano.

My GF and I's exact thoughts. If you don't understand the inherent danger of being on an island that is an active volcano, then I don't know what to tell ya.

Per Wiki, tours are no longer permitted on the island following the '19 eruption. Even though it's private property. I guess NZ won't allow the public to set foot on it. Save for regulated scientific research.

There used to be mining operations on the island for sulfur, 100 years go.

But volcano tours are tricky business, in the best of conditions.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that nature, not man, runs the show.

Reminds me of the lady who foolishly wandered too deep into gator infested waters. Forget the specifics, but her last words were ' maybe this wasn't a good idea'.

Is it wrong that I laughed hysterically at Grizzly Man? What did you think was gonna happen to you, dummy, when you went and slept with angry bears?

Especially in late September, or whenever. Dude as much as anyone should have known better.

Worst part of that was his g/f (wth was she thinking?) went up there to get him to come back home. Got herself ended as well.

Some of Treadwell's last words to his girlfriend were "Get out here. I'm getting killed out here."

The fact that Herzog didn’t put the audio of the attack in his documentary is so stupid. Nobody wants to watch you sit there and listen to the audio, you prick.

And yeah, the girlfriend going back is exceptionally stupid. I get why she’d want to, but at some point instinct has to take over and you don’t put yourself in more danger, especially considering he knew he was done for and was yelling at her to get to safety.

Blizzards are underrated. I'm in the Lake Michigan lake effect zone. We've gotten about 18 inches of Lake effect snow the last 18 hours or so. More importantly than that, there have been steady 40mph winds for the last 12 hours. Temps have been below zero since yesterday.

I grew up in Denham Springs so I have experienced enough hurricanes. I've never been more afraid to step outside than the last 24 hours. Watching the snow gust like this for hours and hours on end is humbling. I haven't been able to see the neighbors house across the street since last night it's been that consistent. I've never experienced a storm like this before.

I grew up in Upstate New York, basically at the eastern end of Lake Ontario. Blizzards and lake effect snow were a way of life.

“Mother Nature” - so reductionistic.

USA couple - annoying “ugly Americans” as usual being self referential.

Yea, I lived in Montana for a while, and I had a number of friends who are absolute savage skiers; I mean the kind of dudes who not only were experts but also had a couple screws loose to do the type of shite they did. We’re talking the types of dudes who wear the avalanche balloons because they do such crazy backcountry shite.

The ones who’d been in or near an avalanche before used to say there’s nothing like it, that it will shake you to your core and change you forever. They said they didn’t know anyone who’d been in one who survived who wasn’t forever different. They’d still hit the slopes, but they could never even consider doing or skiing in some of the conditions they used to go out in.

They’d describe it as something that moves almost as fast as the speed of sound, that you’d see it forming, and by the time you heard it, it was too late. These dudes were guys who’d been in and seen some shite, and the way they talked about avalanches was horrifying.
