I'm talking about the 1951 movie (you can watch the colorized version here, and the black and white version here). Neither Donald Sutherland nor Kevin McCarthy are in 1951's The Thing From Another World ( Wiki page).

pretty evenly matched movies imo. both creeped the hell out of me.

I think it's a tie for me, but the two movies gave me slightly different emotions. Alien was more exciting and gave me those thrilling jumps. The Thing genuinely scared the crap out of me. It was just super creepy, not knowing if your best friend or parents are really a murderous alien.

Alien was a better-directed movie in my opinion. The claustrophobia of it all was extremely well done, especially the scene in the vents.

The Thing was better scripted I think and had a more interesting bad guy. I love the ending theory that Russell had gasoline in the canister and had David drink out of it to see if he was human and would wince. He didn't.
