I dont know how many of you are familiar with the Shannara books but MTV (I know, wtf?) is adapting it for TV. First trailer for it dropped today and its looks intriguing. The production values seem pretty high also its got Manu Bennett in it so thats worth watching atleast one episode for.

Looks like it could be pretty good. If they wanted to make it more like the books, they should have just used all the costumes from Lord Of The Rings.

I havent even watched it yet, but I have to say.

:

I've been looking forward to this for months.

Edit: And now I am not. Sigh. How do you mess up the universe of Shannara? However you do it, it appears they managed to.

I've never read the books but my brother had a couple of them when we we're younger. I think I'm gonna go into with absolutely no expectations and hope for the best.

I read the first two and a half books when I was in junior high, seriously might've been the first books I ever read for pleasure in my life, but other than some character names and the broad outline of the typical fantasy tropes, don't remember anything about them. Production values look decent enough, might be the first thing I watch on MTV in twenty years.

I've been waiting for some kind of adaptation for 30+ years. This better be good, dammit.

I just meant since I first heard about it.

You will happy to know that Allanon is played by a barely 6ft tall Manu Bennet, and in the one brief shot of him in that trailer, he did not have a beard.

I disagree. Other than the "transformer, complete disregard for conservation of mass" sword shot (which is one of the WORST byproducts of CGI) I think it looks pretty good.

Shae looks to be well cast, and the sets are pretty damn awe inspiring. I think it has potential.

As for the books, I loved them as a kid. I re-read them recently and was blown away by how much Brooks ripped off Tolkein. I mean, it was embarrassingly so.

Only the first one, and Brooks was nowhere near as bad as Dennis L McKiernan. His book The Iron Tower sends a man, an elf, a dwarf, and a shorter humanoid, among others. On a quest to destroy a magical device that will end the world. In part of the story they are forced to travel underground while being chased by a pack of underground dwelling bad guys, and are suddenly attacked by an ancient evil being of immense power....

They definitely put money into it, which makes me hopeful.

However, in the books there are no remnants of old human culture(all of the buildings), in fact, old human culture is a myth. Allanon is 7 ft tall, rail thin, with a long beard, and he is being played by a 6 ft tall, buff, clean shaven dude. Plus, I feel like the clothes are completely wrong. No one would be wearing jean clothe. It hasn't been produced in centuries. It would be homespun garments.

Just a few niggles I noticed from the trailer.

I remember all of this because I got on a Shannara kick last May and read 17 books from the series in about 6 weeks. No, not exaggerating.

Agreed! I read, and own, the first edition of The Iron Tower and The Silver Call and there's NO mention of it being an "homage to Tolkien" in the Forward. After he caught a ton of shite over his blatent rip off, later editions added a Forward where he says his aim was to honor TLotRs with a reinterpretation. bullshite. You copied damn near the whole story.

That being said, I kinda liked that the Warrows were way more badass than Hobbits. I know, I know, Hobbits were SUPPOSED to be peace loving, gentle, seemingly harmless creatures that rise to greatness when fate demands it. It's still fun to read about little beings putting arrows through an Orc's eye at 200 yards.

Back to Shannarra, I'm even OK with Allanon. I also LIKE that they show remnants of the tech from the past. THat helps set it apart some from Middle Earth.

I read the original trilogy and a few other subsequent series. I'm looking forward to this.
