Here, for the folks that want to keep starting new threads a out this show...

Feels like one of those shows that needs to stick around for a bit to settle into it's niche.

Just watched the 1st episode.
I didn't laugh, but didn't hate the show. I'll definitely watch the first season.

They say that. But it seems pretty much obvious to me that they try to put laughs in the show. Not always successfully, but I'm pretty sure they try for it.

They have jokes but it's not a comedy in the sense they have set ups and punch lines

Agreed. Certainly made that clear with the second episode. Can't figure out if I want to invest more time in it. I, like most people i would think, was expecting a spoof. Obvious and over the top comedy was my first thought when I heard Seth McFarlane / The Orville. So I'm a little let down but mildly entertained.

Fox must have the absolute worst marketing department.
Just watched the first episode and I am really liking this show. It was marketed as a slapstick comedy by McFarland.
It's actually a pretty cool Scifi star trek tribute/spin off. It's a solid mix of drama, comedy, character development, camp, cheese, Scifi, etc...
I really hope this show gets a chance. I'm excited to see where it goes from here. And hopefully if it doesn't get the traction they want they move it to FXX instead of canceling it. It has potential.
So it was originally marketed terribly, and it's only getting worse. I saw an ad earlier today that said something like "The Orville's craziest adventure yet!" "Tune in to see how crazy this week will be!"
It's only 4 episodes in. Horrendous marketing.

While it probably needs some time to truly find its footing, it really is pretty good so far.
There have even been flashes of brilliance already. The third episode about Bortus' baby was outstanding.
A truly complex social issue was dealt with fairly in a way that should have made people on both sides of the spectrum stop and think and at least consider the other side's thoughts without demonizing them.
And it never even really made a blanket statement one way or the other, even though several of the characters did express their opinions. They just let the story guide the viewer into thought.
For a highly political guy like Meyers, that was very impressive and something that is rare and should be noticed and applauded.
Really think this showed flashes of the spirit of Star Trek that would make Roddenberry proud. More so than some of the actual franchise's shows.

I agree with your post, but I'd like to address this, and I'm not attacking you.
Of course it needs time to find its footing. It's only 4 episodes in. People today, not you specifically, seem to demand everything immediately.
I hope they give it a chance, it has alot of potential.

I am too you can tell Seth is a huge star trek fan and is making his own show in the same vein with his own style.

Agree.
I'm not a big ST fan, but I'm liking this show. It's really good escapism. The characters are likable, the cast seems comfortable with each other, and Seth isn't doing his usual scene stealing.
The resolution of the last episode was not what I was expecting, but seemed to be the only right fit.
I think Seth has a winner here.

It could use a good, old fashioned, laugh track.

It's horrible. MacFarlane has ripped off Star Trek: The Next Generation, beat for beat, plot for plot, he's even aped their intro and bumpers. His "out" is that he can claim that it's a parody, since he's inserted a dick joke into each scene.
I'm astounded that Paramount hasn't put a stop to it.

Not to mention their directors.
Jonathan Frakes, a.k.a. Commander Will Riker, a.k.a. #2 directed the most recent episode.
I say the show is legit.
Unlike, say, The Godfather, it doesn't "insist upon itself".
