How canon are these though? Because I don't remember them ever being explicitly mentioned in the Japanese show. Was it mentioned in the manga?

Ascended certainly was. It's mentioned by Vegeta when he's standing on that cliff in the rain after #18 whooped his arse.

New question, since I appear to always open a can of worms. If SSJ was extremely rare how would Vegeta know about any of other levels? There is a clear difference between SSJ1 & SSJ3 and even between SSJ3 & SSJ4, but between SSJ1 and SSJ3 how would any of them know they've achieved anything other then just juiced up SSJ1?

when Broly goes full power, are you saying a ssj2 could beat him? i dont know if there can actually be a correct answer to this. i always saw Broly as at least ssj3 in power level.

There's pretty clear differences between 1,2 and 3, but this is kinda what I was getting at with the levels in between 1 and 2. Trunks got really buff with the Ultra though and the Full-Power I understand because Goku and Gohan were able to maintain it for long periods of time.

I may not recall correctly, but isn't it common for some fighters to get buff when they are powering up? I think Vegeta had done it once or twice. I just saw it as "I'm letting my power level show, and I'm using it all up in the hopes that my max power in a short burst is enough to defeat you."

Yes, but there was a point made about both Trunks and Vegeta getting bigger after getting out of the time chamber. The idea was to show that they concentrated too much on strength without concentrating enough on speed. Goku and Gohan were better balanced.

Sometimes, yes. Think about Frieza's final form and how he would swell up from when he first hit it > 50% > full power.

I'm all questions...
Did they get rid of scouters(sp?) after the Freiza saga? I don't remember them putting one on the androids or even Cell. It was just "I can feel your power level and it is strong".

They were last used by robot Frieza's henchmen on Earth. Trunks had a power level of 5 (obviously suppressed).

During the Frieza saga it became apparent that scouters are pointless because people can conceal their true power levels, and everyone can use their sense to track people's powers anyway.

Scouters were for people who can't sense Ki. Remember in the fight between Goku and Frieza when he realized he couldn't sense Goku's Ki.
And yes, all the Scouters were destroyed in the frieza saga. They were irrelevant after anyway.

I think they just looked pretty cool. They served as a communications link, a dragon ball finder, a power level reader, and I'm sure much more.
