The Movie Business in Louisiana. Any thoughts on its possible comeback?

I have a family member who works in the film industry. In 2014 and 2015 she was working all the time in Nola and surrounding areas. But it all came to a halt 18 months ago. She has some interest in Atlanta now, but nothing like the volume of stuff she was once doing.
We have heard the business is down 90%. And that seems right. People in the business: What are you hearing? Is there any chance of a comeback or did Jindal screw the pooch beyond recovery?

Gone pecan to Atlanta.
You still got John Schneider, though, so there's that.

Perhaps, if the feds get rid of all their tax goodies in tax reform.
Thw bargains will be with the states.

She has some interest in Atlanta, but nothing like the volume she was once doing? Like she doesn't want to do as much work? Because there's a ton of filming going on all over Atlanta and Georgia in general.

What I mean is: She has gotten some interest from casting agents in ATL. But her connections are with the NOLA agents. So, when roles came up in her wheelhouse, she automatically got a call. And the agents and casting people knew she could do the work. So they recommended her to lots of directors.
And NOLA is less than 3 hours for us. And ATL is over 6 hours. So it's like she will have to start all over in ATL. And it will take a lot more effort on our part to get her roles over there.
We aren't against making a push over there. But we were really hoping a NOLA comeback was on the horizon. Even a little one...

LA movie business was all about the tax credits. LA was losing tons of money bc we were giving them so much in tax credits. It was supposed to have a lasting effect and lead to a permanent industry and a slow decrease on the tax credits, but it wasn't sustainable, and the industry clearly was only using LA for the credits. As soon as we pulled back the tax credits, they moved to the next state they could take advantage of, Georgia

Yeah. I'm sort of aware of the political and economic history of the debacle. I'm sort of curious about what happens next. Is GA the consensus "permanent home" of the business? Or is this gonna be a carnival road show that bounces to NC or somewhere else next?

I can't speak for the tax breaks and if they are still in effect, but a considerable amount of films that were in the area were largely filmed and based out of the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in NO East:
GI Joe Retaliation
Escape Plan
Ender's Game
Jurassic World
Jack Reacher
Green Lantern
Logan
Terminator
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
This was because the tenants on site were not building as much spacecraft in the large facility spaces, so they rented it out to production companies. However, in the last year or so more tenants have come on site, and the major tenants that have been there have been starting to tool up, taking up much of the empty factory space that were rented out for filming.
Not sure if the lower activity at least at the NASA site is a product of other financial factors... and surely it wasn't such a great deal to film there that the lack of space now would cause studios to pull out of the state though.

They would film movies on the sun if the tax credits were right.

The industry is doing fine in New Orleans with at least six major TV series and one large feature (a $60m fox movie called underwater). It's an arms race to find good crew and every local crafts person should be employed. That said the days of multiple tent poles shooting at once are likely done because of the cap on actors salaries that is part of the new legislation. But overall the 180million dollar program will lure more and more production back after a rocky and uncertain period

It's gone won't be back and shouldn't be back. Tell her to move to Atlanta.

I'll miss the industry being here.
I won't miss the people bitching because they thought they'd magically get jobs in the biz or instantly line their pockets with gold because movies are in town.

Thanks. She's 12. An aggressive move for sure at that age. But i'll mention it to her.

Would be best if all that tax subsidized hollywood trash stay out of our state.

It's a carnival road show that follows the subsidies.

Ah, gotcha. I didn't realize you were talking about a 12 year-old in your original post. I have no idea what to tell you.
I know there were discussions on the tax breaks last year, but it sounds like Georgia doesn't plan on making changes any time soon. They keep pushing film careers in the state colleges to keep up with all of the studios opening up, and a lot of the big, non-film corps with political connections are getting in on building studios as well. It sounds like the film industry will be substantial in Georgia for a long time.

Louisiana Politicians are absolute trash.
Much like the Casino Money was meant primarily for Education and health Services and that never happened, the Movie Industry Cash flow was meant to build a sustainable and attractive infrastructure.
They could have invested and made better choices, but everyone involved in that was in it for the quick fix. No long term vision.
IB Freeman wins! Rightfully so.

Again .... it's not dead and is very busy in New Orleans. As long as the existing credits stay in place the state will continue to be a destination for television and film. Georgia has become oversaturated and you will see films return gradually because of the overflow and returning confidence of the incentive. But for now there is plenty of tv work to keep all the local crew working

Another thing to think about is Georgia has major studio infrastructure and corporate involvement from the likes of chic fil a and Home Depot. There is a reason marvel has set up shop in Fayetteville and at Pinewood Studios .... plenty of states have had great Incentives like Ohio and Kentucky but that doesn't mean producers and studios will flock there.
