Candy was one of those guys that would steal scenes in any movie he was in. Even if he wasn't the main guy.

Great examples are Splash, Blues Bros and JFK.

Agreed 100%. And don't forget the aforementioned Vacation. He is the most underrated comedic actors of all time. The Joe Montana story mentioned earlier is gold as well.

The John Candy Man Can Appreciation Thread

Clearly y'all have never seen Armed and Dangerous. John Candy and Eugene Levy were at the top of their game for my favorite John Candy movie. Honorable Mention for Stripes even though he wasn't the lead.

And Splash also. Had a pretty decent dramatic scene in that movie, in addition to some hilarious lines.
He also had a few dramatic parts in PT&A.

Only the lonely was good. I liked how on their first date he took her on a picnic at the old Comiskey Park before they demolished it.

You haven't seen enough of his work and probably have read one too many "bios". The guy was amazing with SCTV and in most of his movies (although, like pretty much every performer, he had a couple of stinkers).

The "Fishin' Musician".

the old SCTV episodes he was funny as hell way back when.

A lot of comedy genius on that show: Candy, Short, Moranis, Levy, Ramis, Flaherty, Thomas

Personally, I thought his cameo in Vacation was one of the things that made that movie a classic.

agree

I loved him on SCTV, too.
and agree,

w/out SCTV it's unlikely anyone ever hears of John Candy.

Count Floyds House of Cats

Andrea Martin in Celebrity Blow up (as Bernadette Peters) so awesome.

"Summer Rental"

Absolutely love this movie and watch it everytime it comes on. Well, plus it has Keri Green :) But what a great cast, Candy, Torn, Laroquette, Crenna. The scene where he kicks every freeloader out of the house

I'm going to play with Yorku now

In my opinion, "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" may be the greatest comedy of all time.

Wtf?

I don't see him for his weight at all.

He's just a likable guy or character in maybe all his movies..

He's also great in Rookie of the Year

Pirate Rip Torn referring to the Scotsman (with full accent and kilt) as "Yeh damn Swede" had us laughing.

the writing of SCTV was really poor, the actors were so good they improved in nearly every scene, it was like watching classic improv.

Who else tears up when Candy tells Martin at the end of PTA about his wife dying years ago? That scene gets me everytime.

Even a bad Candy movie isn't completely terrible (Wagon's East).
