I too watched it Christmas night and it is a great movie. One of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Didn’t regret in the least paying $19.99 to rent it, which I never do.

Watched it last night with no regrets for paying to stream... until I came here and found out it's streaming (free to me) on Peacock.

Fantastic little movie. Giamatti is a little cartoonish at times but it works. Beautifully shot, made me wish I'd seen it in the theater. These perfect period pieces make me wish for 60's and 70's theme parks.

So I guess... "Bump because it's now on Peacock"

watched it a couple days ago

Finally Payne gets back to doing what he's great at.

I couldn't help but notice that it hits several of the same beats as Sideways especially Giamiatti's character but there are enough differences that it doesn't ruin anything.

It's a perfect chicken soup movie for me similar to Chef.

I really enjoyed this movie. It didn’t have any kind of obvious angle and was just a good story.

Very refreshing film w/o any hidden/obvious agendas or preaching. The closest it gets is calling elite/private boarding school kids spoiled but its not pervasive.

All of this. It’s the film people have been wanting. I can’t tell you how nice it was to watch a well crafted, entertaining, and outstandingly acted film and not be preached at. Two big thumps up.

I enjoyed this immensely.

SPOILER

What crazy parent sends their kid to a military school that would put them in line to go straight to Vietnam? Leaving the kid at school over the holidays was completely a-hole behavior, but holy shite, that mom deserves vagina cancer.

SPOILER
Those were the shittiest parents of all. Putting their child in the line of danger would only be a possible relief for them, since they could, "Go on with their lives." if the worst happened.

Spoiler: “What crazy parent sends their kid to a military school that would put them in line to go straight to Vietnam?”
———————————————————————

The stepdad just wanted the kid out of the way and if he died he died.

The mom was looking to put her chapter of dealing with mentally ill men behind her and while the kid was not yet mentally ill there are signs that it may manifest itself later like the dad.

Also, mom wanted to just start over and it is hard to do with an ex-husband who needs care and a son who reminds you of him.

Good movie. My wife and I and our 3 young adult kids all enjoyed it.

Excellent film and best movie I’ve seen this year. I may be biased since Sideways is a top 10 for me.

You can’t do better than Groton. I loved playing games against Roxbury Latin though, they served us tea on silver afterwards. It seemed crazy to me then.

But I think the fact that it touched on several storytelling devices and tropes is also what makes it special.

A coming-of-age school/jock comedy, the beginnings of a Christmas story, several instances of romantic chemistry, a father/son reunion — so many different stereotypical "redemption" concepts that arise, make you think that we're veering in one direction, and then ultimately go nowhere. Pretty much all of the arcs that we see are, in a sense, tragic.

And in the end, much like moments of real life, we're left with a powerful character piece centered around the connection of broken individuals, bonded through shared experience and unexpectedly similar flaws.

It's still playing in Baton Rouge at the Mall, but just one 3:40 pm showing

I could see it possibly getting a short second run at theaters if it gets a lot of nominations for the Oscars.

And it wasn't over the top like dead poets and didn't go sideways.

First film I've watched in awhile where your mind doesn't drift. Totally engaged, didn't want to miss, nor did I dislike a single frame.

Just a well shot/told story and that's it. Which is what most people (silently) just want from Cinema.
