I had never seen this before as a kid. I was raised on the classics like Snow White, Dumbo, Bambi, etc. as well as the movies of my era (Mermaid, Beast, Aladdin, Lion King). That left this film stuck in the middle. It was incredibly depressing (dog hit by a train, Tod abandoned by his owner, Tod's mom killed, best friend tries to kill him). That said, it was a great movie. I had no idea Corey Feldman was the young Tod. I need to check out the rest of these hidden gems like the Black Cauldron next.

This is my favorite Disney movie. Kurt Russell is the grown up Tod as well(if I recall).

I like how Disney paid homage to its past including former child star Russell and Pete's Dragon star Rooney. I seem to recall Haley Mills was supposed to voice a character in one of the 80s movies but they ended up going in another direction.

You may like Watership Down and The Plague Dogs then, however the second is truly one of the saddest animated films ever.

One of the best Disney films ever made. Watched it a few times as a kid. Always made me cry.

I always thought this movie was considered to be part of Disney's down-spiral. This came out in 1981. Was that considered to be part of the dark time for Disney animation or was it after this movie? While not as epic as the 90s films, it should still be considered a classic.

My mom and our neighbor took me, my sister, and the neighbors daughter to see this at the theater. Not even ice cream could help us afterward, we were all fricked up.

I couldn't believe I was watching a Disney movie when the dog got hit by the train. Not only did that happen, but he violently hit branches and rocks on the way down. No way in a hell such an old dog would outlive that. I think he was originally supposed to die. It would have explained the hound's motives to turn more. Instead, it comes across that he is mad at himself for getting his mentor involved and lashes out as Tod because he is an easy target. Also, it wouldn't be a Disney movie if the bad guy didn't plunge to its death (the bear, Gaston, Scar, etc.)

Kurt Russell voices adult Copper. Mickey Rooney is adult Tod. I only know because I recently watched with my daughter.

As a kid I watched this on a loop and had a Disney radio (could've been a mini record player) and would play this every night when I went to sleep. That's one of my earliest memories.
