Between The Force Awakens and Rouge One, they will have recouped their investment when you factor in ticket sales and merchandise. Never mind the fact that they still have at least 4 more movies in the pipe-line.

He sold away everything. 20th Century Fox still retains the rights to the original but that will no longer be the case in 2020 I think.

Lucas isn't hurting for money. More than anything I think selling to Disney is as much about selling to someone who can continue his legacy (merchandising) as it is about the money.
