Not surprising - Dark Tower is a tough one to make a movie out of for sure, too much going on to capture in movie form. I'd say the same thing for "IT", so I'm expecting to be underwhelmed with that one as well. I'll probably rent both on 'on demand' though....

There's such a following and a demand for it that you knew they would make it one day, but I wouldn't have touched this with a ten foot pole. As you said, so damn difficult to adapt.

Some stories just don't do well in movie form.

Well a lot of people said that about Lord of the Rings and that was considered pretty successful. Although LOTR is much smaller in comparison.

I don't know about that - I thought LOTR was a huge undertaking for a movie (series), but it seemed more suited for the big screen- story and characters were pretty straightforward. The Dark Tower series is awfully complex- lots of depth in the story and characters that can't really be brought out in a movie.

Completely disagree.

Fantasy is a very fine line as far as adaptability pertains. Some stories really lend to visual adaptation. LOTR or GOT are examples of fantasy stories that are incredibly adaptable, given how much is visual in nature. Yes the scale is massive which presents a very big challenge, but the material is relatively straightforward.

The Dark Tower is completely different IMO.

Doesn't help when you start out by fundamentally changing the main character

The Dark Tower has been in production for around ten years in some form or another. This final product reminds me a lot of the GOP healthcare plan: You’ve had all this time and THIS is what you come up with? I can already picture John McCain strolling into a theater this weekend, giving a dramatic thumbs down, killing The Dark Tower forever.

Heaven knows, the books offer more invention than could fit in one feature film, but in their effort to introduce newcomers to this world, the filmmakers make the saga's contents look not archetypal but generic and cobbled together.
Called it.

There was going to be no depth to this movie. They wanted the Hodors of the world to not get confused, ignored the actual fan base, and made a very generic action movie.

At a, minimum they could've actually tried to adapt the book though

I mean just basing it off the trailers, it looks pretty bad. The trailer is pretty awful, it does nothing to draw me in and has no discerning moment where I think "man that's going to be a good movie".
