I don't really believe in possessions and that kinda shite either, but that doesn't mean I am incapable of wrapping myself in a movie and enjoying it as entertainment (which includes being scared by it).
well i can enjoy the movies (i enjoyed the conjuring and sinister) without believing, and you can get creeped out. but horror-scary movies are a lot more psychological than the avengers. for lack of a better word, horror movies need to be insidious to be very effective. non-belief removes a lot of that opportunity, imho
it's like the exorcist. not scary at all to me, but a really, really good movie.

Sinister was really good until the end.
yes. this genre suffers from the ability to end it, generally. sinister really fell off

No question.
That's why I laud movies like The Possession...ones that actually have decent endings rather than ones like The Devil Inside, where it just completely falls off the rails. It's an odd genre in that a movie can be SO good for an hour and a half, and if they don't end it well (which is common), the movie can suffer from that.
And, without getting into spoilers, Sinister COULD have ended really well...they just chose the wrong way to end it IMO, which made it almost instantly unbelievable.

it's the reveal. it was posted about earlier in here, but the unseen terror is much scarier

Most disappointing horror movie ever. People were calling this shite show the scariest movie ever. I can't recall a single scary thing about it.

The "psychic" wife "proving" her powers to the family is complete comedic gold
She picks up a picture of the fireplace of the family surrounded by sand and smiling from ear to ear
"Your family was at the beach here"
"OMG HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT"
"Yall were very happy that day"
"OMG WE WERE!!! YOU MUST BE SOME KIND OF VOODOER !!!"

It's not even that IMO...even the reveal can be good/scary. The problem comes in with resolution. It's not easy to wrap a supernatural story up where things are "defeated" (or whatever) and the protagonists are back too normal with things all good.
(slight Sinister spoilers)
In Sinister, for example, even when Baghul is revealed, it's still pretty well-done. The problem lies in wrapping things up without leaving things too open-ended, which isn't always easy to do with this type of topic.
