The fact that more threads are started about it than Raising Arizona saddens me.

I agree with this. I think Raising Arizona is better than The Big Lebowski. The ending to Raising Arizona almost made me as a grown arse man cry.

The dialogue

I honestly don't know if you're trolling, but if you're not, I will simply say that The Big Lebowski has some of the best dialogue in cinema history. Particularly for comedies. It is simply some of the most clever, well delivered dialogue I can think of.

I love the Coen brothers for the most part but I really don't like the Big Lebowski, Fargo, or Raising Arizona although I've only seen that one once.

I challenge anyone to present a movie with better dialogue than TBL. I can think of none.

Walter Sobchak: fricking Germans. Nothing changes. fricking Nazis.

Donny: They were Nazis, Dude?

Walter Sobchak: Oh, come on Donny, they were threatening castration! Are we gonna split hairs here? Am I wrong?

I'm with you. I predict some Tarantino movie--probably Pulp Fiction--will be thrown out as better.

I don't agree with that sentiment, but I imagine someone will say it.

I could say the same for you though. That's the beauty of it. I watch it and wonder how it's not listed among the stinkers of our time. Maybe it's because of how much I like RA, Fargo, NCFOM, A Serious man and True Grit. Maybe it's just not fair that I compare it to those. Maybe I would like it if those did not exist. But they do, and I cannot stand the dialogue in TBL. Can't stand any aspect of it really.

I could go on and on. Look, no is saying you shouldn't like it. I can't understand why it's so hard to believe many people find this movie to be shite.

I've only seen it once and thought it was just ok.

There are a few funny scenes in it, but it's mostly just dull and crass.

I can see why some people don't like it. I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is that calling the dialogue "forced" is about like saying 2001's match cut is too jarring, and, therefore, "forced." In fact, it's worse because at least the fact that it's jarring supports your contention that it's forced. But the match cut of the bone to the space station is often considered one of the best of all time. Similarly, The Big Lebowski is often considered to have some of the best dialogue in film.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but it becomes a bit suspect when you are going against a tidal wave of critical acclaim for a given part of a movie when you provide nothing to support your claim other than "Hey, look, I can find a few people on the internet who agree with me."

I mean, no shite. You can find a few people on the internet who believe we shouldn't vaccinate our kids or that we should teach creation science in schools in our fricking biology classes. Or that the great planet Tiamat was destroyed by the rogue planet Nibiru, which contained alien lifeforms that gave us technology and are now housed on a comet that comes around every so many given years and that's when our technological leaps occur. I know. I've read it. It's fricking fascinatingly absurd.

If you wanted to say you felt their was no conflict, that there was no real plot, that the plot wasn't gripping or that it went all over the place, those are arguments that I can see being made and for which examples could be provided. I would disagree and provide my own examples for why those arguments are wrong, but I can see it.

But saying that the dialogue of the Big Lebowski is forced without going further, and when considered in the context of that movie's dialogue being widely considered brilliant is grounds for me to wonder if you are trolling. Providing me with links to nonsense lists from Joe Schmoe as proof that the movie is overrated is (a) suspect evidence at best, and (b) beside the point you are trying to make which is that the dialogue is forced.

quote:

I could go on and on.
but you would just look more and more foolish. You don't like the movie. That's fine. But if you don't provide anyone on here with a rational reason for it and, in fact, attack perhaps the strongest point of the film without explaining yourself, you appear to be at best purposefully contrarian and at worst purposefully trolling for laughs. Even if you are not.

It was forced and pathetic given the other Coen works of brilliance.

This trolling thing you've latched on to. Why do you think you're using this crutch? I guess you have nothing else. So, a person who likes many Coen movies is just going to pick TBL to troll over? Do you not see how lame this is? Especially when "overrated" is so commonly linked to it?

Look how many words you wasted because some guy you'll never meet said the dialogue was forced. Jeez, you're a strange human

Everything you said was an utter deflection. You have no leg to stand on and it's painful to watch you embarrass yourself.

But I think I shall.

LoveThatMoney doesn't fall for any of that Bush-League psych out shite! It's laughable man! He woulda fricked you in the arse on page one, but now he'll frick you in the arse on page 3 instead!

Gauntlet has been laid down--BOOM

Anyway, I can see how this movie isn't for everyone. I personally think the dialogue is lock tight, albeit a bit crass and vulgar. The comedy played out by a group of people who have no intentions of being funny at any point in the whole movie is writing and acting genius. After all, look at the actors involved.

I can get a complaint about subject matter, or even not thinking it's funny bc it's not your sense of humor, but I agree that saying the writing/dialogue is forced is seriously the weakest possible argument you can make about this movie.

And so, Theodore Donald Karabotsos, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your final mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean, which you loved so well.
