A group of Star Wars fans are threatening to spoil The Force Awakens, the latest episode in the franchise, on social media unless studio Disney agrees to film the saga’s abandoned “expanded universe” stories.

Lucasfilm executives announced in April 2014 that only the six Star Wars feature films, as well as the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, were considered part of the saga’s official canon. They also said that the new series of films, of which JJ Abrams’ The Force Awakens is the first instalment, would not draw on the hundreds of Star Wars novels and comic books published in the wake of success of the original trilogy.

An online organisation going by the moniker The Alliance to Preserve the Expanded Universe has been campaigning ever since for Disney to change its mind, for fear that characters such as Mara Jade, Jacen Solo and Cade Skywalker will be consigned forever to the garbage compactor of history. Now, members have been caught making threats to reveal The Force Awakens’ deepest secrets via social media in a process dubbed “spoiler jihadi” in online circles.

Even if I know the entire plot, it would not spoil the movie for me.

My question is this:

While there is a lot of good stuff in the EU, there is also a lot of crap (I'm looking at you, Caravan of Courage). Have these nerds come up with a system as to what's in and what's out?

I do not see what the big damn deal is, why does it matter. So the EU is no longer cannon, just means they get to come up with new stuff that is not tied to tired old stuff.

Look, outside of Shadows of the Empire, The Thrawn Trilogy, and Knights of The Old Republic, the majority of the EU is shite.

Isn't it already too late?

This movie pretty much destroys all early books or so I would assume.

I'm pretty sure anyone who cares about Star Wars is already planning to avoid all social media between the time it comes out and when they see it, so I'm not sure this is really that big of a threat.

I was upset the whole EU was thrown out, even the before ROTJ stuff. They actually have five new cannon books, I just started one the other day. (Aftershocks, I think)

The Thrawn Trilogy was excellent and should have been made instead of the prequels.

Ummm...

How can it be spoiled when it's already "out"?

And I'd be incredibly surprised if we didn't get a theatric version of "Knights of the Old Republic". Doesn't really interfere with anything in the canon and is a good story. Wouldn't surprise me if we got it before 2020.

It's alright.

The primary plot is a bit slow and I was only kind of into it. The much more interesting stuff was the big picture scrambling done by both sides after the Battle of Endor. In fact, it's pretty obvious that the plot was only constructed as a vehicle to show us that galaxy in chaos because of the sideflash chapters.

The problem with the EU was that there was just so much of it and no committee to work towards making sure it all ties together. 20 years of EU means that there's bound to be some junk piled in with the gems.

The new EU will be in similar shape in a few years, but it should all tie together more neatly at least.

I do think kicking out pre-film EU material was dumb, but the post RotJ stuff is understandable

I am disappointed in the removal of Mara Jade. She was badass and had a great story.

Doesn't really matter to me that they had to get rid of it for TFA. I can still read the books.
