We have one these every few months, but its now officially December. Which means gifting time, and what better to get a book nerd for Christmas, than more books.

It's time to name recommendations, and books that have piqued your interest, from the fantasy world in the last 6 months to a year. Or older, who cares, the same old same olds will always get posted. But it's time for us to share the books we love to convince others to pick them up.

Yes, this thread is really here because I'm at my in-laws and she buys me 15-20 books every time I come up here...and I need a list because I haven't paid attention in a while. I just wished my library wasn't packed up so I could have looked at all the authors I already have. I can't member everything.

Not new but reading Robin Hobb's Assassin series, and liking it a lot right now. Better than Game Of Thrones series.

Made the mistake of reading one late in the series, first. Which makes it hard to go back, but you're right. It is a great series.

I've never been able to get into GoT. I own and have read a few hundred fantasy books at this point, and GoT just doesn't grab me enough to finish more than 1 or 2 pages. I dunno why. Even series that are considered generic fantasy are better to me.

Kingkiller is a great series. Unfortunately he writes at the speed of George Martin.

I just read/listened to the 2 kingkiller chronicles books...holy crap they were amazing. I actually enjoyed the story itself more than GoT.

I'm on the second book of the dark tower series. It's not really what I expected. Far from traditional fantasy, seems more philosophical. It's a little slow but not bad. I think I prefer swords and arrows over pistols however though

All of the ones I've previously posted have been audiobooks. All of the narrators have been great. Especially Red Rising which I highly recommend.

I started the audiobook for Dark Tower 1 (Gunslinger) during the summer but I just couldn't get into it.

I've read that the first one is really different tone wise then the rest of the series but I just could get through it.

I'm not sure if it was the writing or the narration but it really put me off to trying any other King stories (I haven't read any previously). I was really looking forward to 11.22.63 but I didn't pick it up after not liking the Gunslinger.

I can tell you right now 11/22/63 is nowhere close to the Gunslinger. I read the first book and can't get through the second one. I was not prepared for the sudden change in direction. I did not like where it was going. I really liked the first one too.

Speaking my language right here. I love sword and sorcery stuff. Tracy Hickman, Margaret Weis, Morgan Llewellyn, Stephen R Lawhead...etc.

Yeah I'm at the part in the 2nd where he's looking through the eyes of a heroin addict in present day. shite is really weird

I did, however, enjoy the dialogue at the end of the gunslinger where the man in black tries to put the idea of an infinite universe into perspective to someone who has never even heard the term "universe". Especially because mcchonaghey is playing that role and you can definitely picture him delivering those lines lol

I can't imagine you'd be disappointed. Just remember its not nearly as grand in scope as many other series, just an absolute badass recounting his tale.

Does no one write the Weis/Hickman fantasy style anymore? I really enjoy the way they go about world and character building.

Just seems like most fantasy writers these days are either in the GoT, WoT, LOTR...etc schools, or trying to create universes that are beyond pure fantasy....more dystopian, steam punk, or alternate reality style stuff.

Doesn't seem to be a lot of true high fantasy being written anymore. At least, that I've found yet.

That's about the time I quit reading the second book as well. I just lost interest from the philosophical aspect of the first one.

This book was in a pile at a hotel I stayed at. I read about half of the first one (until he was in training/trials) then it got too young adult like for my taste. Premise was really cool though.
