TFA character question at beginning of movie (SPOILERS)

Who was the old man at the beginning of the movie and was he on the planet to protect Rey similar to Obi Wan protecting Luke? Does this make the old man a Jedi?

He wasn't a Jedi, and it's unclear how he got the map to Luke's location. I don't think he had any connection to Rey.

We don't really know much about him now I don't think, but I imagine he'll be the main character of a few books or video games.
