Terminator Genisys is Killing It Internationally, May Get a Sequel After All

Alan Taylor's Terminator Genisys didn't perform too well when it arrived in theaters last month... but believe it or not, the franchise might have a fighting chance to move forward. This is because the movie just had its opening in China, and the cash is finally starting to roll in.
Variety has posted an update from the China box office, and the trade notes that the feature is actually the fourth-biggest opening day for a Hollywood-made movie. According to sources, the film managed to make a surprising $27.4 million on Sunday from 25,000 locations. This total means that the worldwide box office total has reached $335.1 million - the project having cost a reported $155 million to make.
The explosive performance of Terminator Genisys in China is actually the continuation of a trend - specifically the movie doing way better internationally than it did domestically. In its time in theaters here in the United States, the feature has only managed to make a little more than $89 million - $27 million of which came from its third place opening the first weekend of July. In comparison, however, the blockbuster has absolutely been killing it abroad. To date, nearly three-quarters of the worldwide pull has come from foreign theaters. In addition to China, the movie is also doing well in Russia, South Korea, Australia, and the United Kingdom (according to Box Office Mojo).
The question of whether or not the Terminator franchise has a future is one that still has not gotten a firm answer. When Paramount Pictures announced that they were working on a series "reboot," they took the initiative to say that the first movie would be the first part of a planned trilogy. As of now, the studio still has "Terminator 2" and "Terminator 3" penciled in for May 19, 2017 and June 29, 2018. It's a situation that somewhat mirrors what's going on with The Fantastic Four over at 20th Century Fox, though the Terminator situation actually looks much less bleak by comparison.
Success in China could be the exact motivation that Paramount is looking for in considering the future of the new Terminator series - and the truth is that a sequel could actually succeed beyond Terminator Genisys simply because a follow-up wouldn't have to spend so much time establishing a new timeline. There are some interesting plot threads that still need to be tied up, and there still exists some beautiful potential to do something with this story. It's just a matter of spending the time and energy to figure it all out.

The chinese still love them some Arnold. This movie only made 88 mil domestically, but it's expected to do well over 400 million in total box office numbers. Wow

I thought the movie was decent. It had some serious fail moments. Hopefully they can improve on some things. I would love to see how the trilogy ends up.

its going to need serious legs in China if they want a sequel
w/marketing costs and theater splits the movie is not yet in the black.
B/c of the way China protects its industry during the summer Terminator is about to face heavy competition from Mission Impossible 5, Minions, Inside Out, Ant-Man, and Pixels. A Jackie Chan movie called Skiprace which is supposed to do huge business over there will soon open too.
Also, there are worries the Chinese economic downturn will cause less people to be willing to go to the movies than in other years.
Another thing to consider is that James Cameron gets the Terminator rights back in 2019 so the current rights holders will need a huge return on their investment to get another film going to beat that date.

I still haven't seen it but will on dvd... The marketing and previews looked bad but I continue to hear good things about the movie from people that I share movie tastes.. I just can't believe some of the things they showed during the previews

My brother did a marathon of Terminator movies plus the tv show before he saw Genysis.
His tl;dr review was "It's the 4th best Terminator movie and I liked the show better even though John was a whiny shithead the entire series."
I haven't seen it yet either but that was enough for me to wait until it hits the movie channels.

James Cameron will somehow manage to turn the next Terminator into another Pocahontas ripoff. The man is out of ideas.
But you can book that the next one will have a few high profile Chinese actors in it.

Jai Courtney ruins old movies, he was bad in Die Hard sequel.
The Games of Thrones girl didn't impress me either. She just seemed out of her element or maybe she's typecast.

I would think he'd just put terminator in the bottom drawer and set about breaking new ground somewhere.

Yeah the special effects. Outside of the Arnold clone, the SFX were cartoony (Arnold nose-diving out of the chopper).

They were incredibly somehow worse than the effects in T2

I saw it this weekend at the discount theater and really enjoyed it. Something about seeing it for 1.50 instead of 10.00 really helped. Arnold was my favorite part. I also did not like Reece, Connor or GOT Lady. I am not a Termonator purist, but I thought the action scenes were great and the story was meh.

The marketing killed the movie honestly.
What should have been the biggest moment in the movie and probably one of the biggest in the series was ruined by marketing

1. The trailer gave too much away.
2. They made it with intentions on making two sequels. Too many things were not explained. Too much sequel bait. It left us with an incomplete movie.
3. The emotional ending was completely destroyed by reversing the emotional loss almost immediately.
