Terminator 2: Judgment Day At 30

James Cameron wanted a villain made out of liquid metal. In the brainstorming phase for Terminator 2: Judgment Day, he knew the sequel to his first big hit had to have something no one had seen before. Something that, in the early ’90s, had never even been attempted. He’d landed on the idea of the T-1000, an android assassin seemingly made of flowing mercury that could shape-shift into any other organism. And by the time he was done, he’d created one of 20th century cinema’s greatest “Holy shite!” moments.
Yet the science-fiction epic, released 30 years ago this week, hinged on more than technical wizardry. To its director, T2 is the story of a boy and the father he never had. The sequel wouldn’t work without a strong bond between the reprogrammed title character and the teenager he’s sent back in time to protect. “Sure, there’s going to be big, thunderous action sequences, but the heart of the movie is that relationship,” Cameron says from his home in New Zealand. “I have always loved The Wizard of Oz. This movie is about the Tin Man getting his heart.”
quote:
“Look at Titanic, it’s all about relationships,” says Arnold Schwarzenegger, who relished the chance to turn the cybernetic bad guy he played in The Terminator into a good guy. “That’s what makes it touching.”
The juxtaposition of warmth and spectacle is what elevates Terminator 2 above nearly all other ’90s popcorn flicks. But that somehow undersells its appeal and influence. Industrial Light & Magic’s cutting-edge visual effects, a Kevlar-tough woman as the lead, dozens of memorable one-liners, and terrifyingly prescient themes combined to form a blockbuster that pushed the limits of the medium. The top-grossing movie of 1991 escalated a big-screen arms race that’s played out in American cineplexes every summer since.
quote:
Cameron: That was just me having fun with an authority figure. But there is a thematic point to that, which is that we, as human beings, become terminators. We learn how to have zero compassion. Terminator, ultimately, isn’t about machines. It’s about our tendency to become machines.
quote:
Cameron: I remember sitting there once, high on E, writing notes for Terminator, and I was struck by Sting’s song, that “I hope the Russians love their children too.” And I thought, “You know what? The idea of a nuclear war is just so antithetical to life itself.” That’s where the kid came from.

You know I used to think T2 was the be all and end all of Action movies.
But recently rewatching T1 and T2 back to back...its apparent T1 is the superior movie and HOW different the two movies are.
T1 is relentless, action, horror, visceral.
T2 is...well too much, we're not taking this that seriously late 80's catchphrases and Edward Furlong.
T1 was more like The Thing.
T2 was like a Kumbaya therapy session between man and machine with Family Ties stuff but LOADS of action.
IDK, T1 Felt like an R movie. T2 felt like a PG movie on rewatch back to back...too much casual humour and not taking the situation seriously but pulls at the heart...in kinda a corny way. Both great but T2 just doesn't have that raw Dred of T1. You never feel like the new Terminator is going to get them so the suspense is lost. The suspense in T1 is amazing.
I think Reese dying pulled more at the heart.

T2 is a better action movie and it’s not really close. It has a half dozen scenes that are seminal.

It is as I mentioned, the action is over the top great.
But is it really the better movie?
Watch them back to back again.
T1 is way more intense, scary and doer have a corny vibe in its bone.

2 is way better than 1. It's not even close IMO.

T1 is absolutely a an sci fi action horror flick. T2 is sci fi action suspense.
Both fantastic movies. I don't see one as superior to the other. Both excelled at what they were looking to accomplish.

I've always liked T1's overall story better.

I laughed at her being made into a female Rambo when it came out and every time I have seen it since.
This comes across as a parody;

At 12 years old, my dad brought a friend and I to see it with him. First rated R movie I ever saw.

It's just like Alien and Aliens...
Same franchise, different movies regarding similar antagonists.

That's just not true. The only thing T2 has going for it is the T-1000. I saw Terminator growing up, and I walked around for years saying, "I'll be back", "Sarah Conner?", "F&*# you A-hole" and other lines.
What's seminal about T2? Thumb's up? The bad actor kid wearing a Public Enemy t-shirt? Hasta la Vista, Baby? I swear I won't kill anyone?

T2 going PG-13
What?

Sorry, my mistake. It felt PG-13 to me compared to the first one.

T1 is first and foremost a sci-fi movie, and has more horror elements than action.
T2 is a summertime action flick.
T2 is the greatest action movie of all time. It’s perfect.

I dont mind what they did with her, as someone who saw what was coming..she used the heads up to take full advantage. I can see where she would do as much as possible to save the world.
I just liked it when she was a random girl, who stepped up when it mattered. Also Arnold was scarier, I liked Reese, and the feel of the film.

Saw it when I was 8 at my uncle’s, who had one of those giant satellite dishes that got all kinds of channels. My first rated R as well. I was blown away.

Well, for one, The Terminator isn't an action movie. It's a slasher film with a sci-fi twist. All of the elements of the slasher genre are there: unstoppable main antagonist, innocent and virginal survivor girl, main antagonist has a thing for killing women, etc. It's also very low budget, very gritty, and more reminiscent of Friday the 13th than it is of something like Commando. You are right that The Terminator and Terminator 2 are both very different films. One is a horror film while the other is pure action/sci-fi.
