Murray by far. Martin doesn't really work great solo. Yeah, there's the Jerk but that relied on playing it totally deadpan. Murray kills in almost every movie he's in whereas Martin is just sort of there amongst the cast. You could easily name two great Murray films/performance for every Martin one. Hell, the ratio is probably as high as 3:1.

I also choose Murray, but anyone who says Murray by far is fricking retarded or just doesn't watch enough movies. Their work is probably equal, but I've just been a huge Bill Murray fan my whole life.

Martin was once awesome but each new movie he makes adds to the tarnishing of his reputation. He has made some real crap movies in the last 20 years. Martin reminds me of Robin Williams, a pioneer of comedy at one time who has now wholly sold out for big paydays. Murray still does great work and takes chances like his work in The Life Aquatic.

Nonsense. Martin has been hard pressed to make me laugh after 3 Amigos.

Little Shop of Horrors; Planes, Trains, and Automobiles; Dirty Rotten Scoudrels; Leap of Faith; Bowfinger; Bringing Down the House.

The problem is all the stupid remakes he made. Bilko, Out of towners, Pink Panther.

He's really shitting the bed lately. But his band, late night interviews, and cameos have still been mainly hilarious.

I'd agree with that. Bill Murray has never struck me as capable of the kind of brilliance that Steve Martin is capable of at times (certainly he is a better banjo player and painter). For body of work Murray probably wins and I think Steve Martin has been mailing it in for quite a while with his movies. But I have no doubt that Steve Martin is the more talented of the two.

I'll take Murray overall, but The Jerk is on of my favorite movies of all time (and is in my top 7 comedies).

Murray makes me laugh more than Martin, but I feel like Martin is getting shite on a bit in this thread a little more than he should. Steve Martin movies that I enjoy:

The Jerk
The Man With Two Brains
Three Amigos
Little Shop of Horrors (even though he's barely in it, he's awesome)
Parenthood
L.A. Story
Father of the Bride
Housesitter
Leap of Faith

(haven't seen all of P,T,&A or DRS in the last twenty years or more...don't remember much about them)

20 years ago, I would've said Martin, but Bill Murray's late career has been outstanding. Martin really hasn't been in a good movie since... what? Leap of Faith? Meanwhile, Murray has killed it with a late career renaissance.

Martin's interested in other stuff like the banjo and writing plays. He just hasn't focused on Hollywood in a long time.

Steve Martin is one of the revolutionary geniuses of comedy in the modern era. If you look at overall impact and the whole body of work, its not really close. He has written brilliant books, made amazing music, and written performed standup and sketch comedy that changed the landscape.

Granted, Bill Murray has been in more good movies. But thats a limited view of the two careers.

I liked that one. Keep in mind that I was 11 at the time. But I remember seeing it with my mom and it was decent.

Martin was good in My Blue Heaven, The Jerk, Planes/Trains, Father of The Bride and 3 Amigos. Trying to listen to his standup now is unbearable though and nothing close to funny. He has way more shitty movies on his resume with pretty much anything since 1995.

Murray was great in Caddyshack, What About Bob, Kingpin, Groundhog Day and Lost in Translation. He still makes good movies. Even some of his busts were worth watching because of him.

Murray is much better than Martin and one of the greatest all time.

Very underrated film. The drunk driving test is a classic.

Parenthood

Outstanding movie, but Steve had a lot of help pulling that one off. Jason Robards is strong as well as Rick Moranis.

ETA: On topic, despite what I've just said, Bill Murray edges Steve Martin out. Stripes and Ghostbusters were just too strong. His recent work is pretty good/edgy too. He has remained more relevant than Steve Martin.

It's a tie for me, so I will go with a tie breaker. If you ha to have a night out on a town with one of them, who would be the funniest just in small groups of people and not for a large audience. I give that edge to Bill Murray. The dude most likely farts comedy in his sleep.

I'm going with Murray. Martin has been in some good movies, but Murray has been in more. And I can't believe nobody has said Rushmore.
