Stephen King Book recommendations

I figured this was a good place to ask about books, rather than the OT.
I've never read a SK book before recently. I'm not necessarily a horror genre kinda guy, but figured he's the most famous in the area so might as well give it a shot. Someone gave me Needful Things for free so that's my first exposure. I'm about halfway through and it's pretty good so far. If I wanted to read some of his other works, what would yall recommend? There is a caveat though, after reading the unabridged Count of Monte Cristo, I decided that long as shite books (like ~1200ish pages) just aren't for me. Nothing against the story or the author, I just don't like reading a book that long. So, I guess for the sake of this discussion the Stand and IT would probably be out. Yes, I realize those are probably 2 of his best works. I'll just miss out on those, oh well. Aside from that...what suggestions would you have that are under 1000 pages?

I've had The Stand sitting on my desk for 10 years begging me to read it.

I hear good things about this one. It's about vampires right? Do you think it'd still be an enjoyable read even if the reader doesn't care at all about vampires?

Start with:
The Stand
It
Salem's Lot
The Shining
Seriously, don't worry about page count.
You're comparing Dumas to King? King is going to read FAR faster.

You can't give yourself a limit on pages if you're gonna read books. Might as well not even read. Just read It and The Stand and pretend you're reading 4 books of 600 pages.

Don't believe I compared the 2 as authors, just said that I would prefer not to read another book over 1000 pages. Like I said it's a personal thing, I just kinda get bored after that many pages.

Hope you stretched before making that leap

Well you're basically saying, "I want to read, but it better not take me too long." Doesn't sound like you'll enjoy it if that's your mindset, having a countdown until you're finished with it.

How is my personal preference any different than someone saying "I love movies, but would rather they be under 3 hours"? People complain about long movies all the time.
I like reading. I try to read when I have free time. I would just prefer to not read a book that is over 1000 pages. What's the big deal? To suggest that I "might as well not even read" is complete idiocy.

You got bored because you're reading a translation of an Old World Text. It's a brilliant book no doubt, but it's dense, slow, complex, and everything you read you're having to think far more about because you're reading something that we don't directly connect to as a culture.
In short, reading old books, especially gigantic old books, is tough.
Stephen King is cake compared to Dumas. You're doing yourself a HUGE disservice by cutting The Stand or It from the get go. If you're mildly interested in King, you will love both.
However, if that still doesn't convince you, read The Shining first. That's a bit thinner. If you love that, go for It. If you can handle that, you HAVE to read The Stand.
Reading 2 pages of Dumas is like 10 pages of King. Seriously.

Sounds like a reasonable game plan. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah it wasn't really the quickest read I've ever had ha.

Well it might have been a leap, but to leave out those two based on length is pretty silly, considering your limit is 1000 pages, and they're both only about 160 pages longer than that.

Not much different, but good movies that are over 3 hours don't feel that long. Same goes for a good book. If you're enjoying it, you shouldn't worry about the page count.
Just suggesting that you don't rule those out..

Dumas is a beast. His prose is awesome and 3M moves a bit faster than Monte Cristo, but even then it's slllooowwwww going. To bring this on board topic, I think that's why the movie so good. It certainly skips major beats from the book, but it actually does a really good job and making the narrative more efficient.
You should read Proust next. Come on. Not KIng.

I thoroughly enjoyed 11/22/63. It's on the long side, but it's an engrossing thrill ride of a story. It's not a horror story either, but it's still distinctly King in the way that it's written. It's basically about a guy that discovers a time machine and travels back to try to stop the Kennedy assassination in the hope that it would prevent a lot of other tragedies (like Vietnam) from following it.

11/22/63 is a really good quick read. It is long, but you get through it fast. I enjoyed it also.

Yup.
That's the thing here, The Stand is super important. It is King's only, and a legit, "Great American Novel." It's a classic with very few equals in the genre.

Eyes of the Dragon has always been my favorite book by King.
