Holy shite

Gamechanger?

Starting next week, The CW is expanding its reach. Watch DC TV shows like The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl on Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, XBox, Amazon Fire TV for free. According to the network, “every show on The CW will be available.” The CW App may quite literally be the only place to stream CW shows since network will reportedly no longer offer next-day on-demand access to its shows on Hulu and it's a hassle to legally watch The CW live without cable. Instead of Hulu, CW shows will be available on Netflix just a few days after seasons end.

All of their shows are on their website the next day. This isn't a big deal.

That's cool, but from my experience the episodes go away after awhile: and this is showing that there will be an app on everything:

Apple TV, Fire Stick, Chromecast, Roku, etc.

It's going to be a better version of Hulu Plus, for CW shows - for free

they also confirmed that the CW shows would be coming to Netflix like 2 weeks after the last episode of the season starting next year.

I would assume that remains the case. If it were easier to catch up on the show in season then NetFlix wouldn't have reason to pay as much for the shows after the season.

that's huge - as a cord cutter CW is the only channel i can't pick up consistently without pixelating constantly. i suppose there is a separate app to download for Apple TV.

Yes there will be, you will download it just like you do Netflix, HBO go, etc.

Terrible move. I watch TV exclusively on my PS4 with Hulu (and I have PS Vue during football season) My wife watches the originals on Hulu since it's there the next day. She isn't going to want to go in the den to where my appleTV is hooked up to watch it. That's our kids living room and they take it over during the day.

After typing all that out I'm thinking:

/first world problems.

She probably will just go into that room and watch it on the 48" TV instead of the 55"

They'll probably get a PS4 app in time. It seems like the thinking behind this move is to get their shows as widely distributed as possible without middlemen such as Hulu taking a cut of the ad revenue. Also an option would be to use a software DVR like PlayOn to record from the CW and she could access shows from either TV with something like Plex.

Hilarious that the CW is basically tweaking their secondary output and people across social media are freaking out like it's some major inconvenience.

Really it makes sense though. I'd have to think that more people then ever are using "secondary output" as their source of programming and that number will surpass traditional methods eventually. The only thing I watch live is football, everything else, I watch on a streaming service of some type, and I have been for a long time.

Who wants to plan their evenings around an air time for a television show and sit through commercials that you can't control. Even the DVR crowd will start to dwindle now that there are services such as PS Vue and Sling TV. It won't be long and "secondary output" will overtake live air output IMO.

Esp when you factor in millennials and more of the next generation gets to the age where they begin to chose their TV viewing options

It's the people watching live and on DVR that are the network's bread and butter. They're making some income on the secondary viewers but not what they're getting for broadcast/cable/satellite.

Not until secondary viewing is as easy as broadcast/cable. Broadcast/cable is still as easy as turning on your faucet. Adding a DVR is a minor added step to view your program. People ask, "Who's watching regular TV?" It's viewers who aren't sitting down for event viewing. They get home, turn on the TV, and either surf or check their DVR. They might go the Roku or other device if they have a specific show in mind, but every night isn't movie night or binge night.
