It doesn't need to be. That's a high bar. I also don't want the prequels to be the bar

We're continuing the story of the OT cast and there is now a new cast to introduce. We'll see how it goes. I'm optimistic

Not arguing this again, but here's the afi top 100. Star Wars is #15. All time, all movies.

i also think the force awakens would do better to follow the footprint of Star Wars rather than empire. I hope we get the movie we've been waiting for.
I have doubts, not so much about the FA, but the whole trilogy and the likely shitstorm of spinoff movies. Talk about milking commerce.

Again, "some of the shittiest movies ever made."

No I know, so there's no use saying well in this aspect they're better

Its the worst thing ever put on the screen so end of story

Speaking of ebert, I've often thought he took money from studios

Industry rankings disagree with you. Star Wars makes many top tens. Empire rarely cracks the top 100 lists.

That's a different kind of list. Empire really doesn't work as well with out Star Wars, so as an all time list, i understand that Star Wars will rank higher. You kinda need to have seen it for Empire to work. However, with in the 3 or 6 movies, Empire is often ranked as the best part of the series. That said, I have no problem with someone ranking Star Wars #1.

For me its

Empire
Star Wars

Jedi

Phantom Menace

Sith/Clones

They all do, man. Who was the one who got busted? Rex Reed? I can't remember.

I actually thought I remembered it being in the top 10. Just in terms of impact, it deserves to be.

But your arguments are based on straight up film craft, and Empire doesn't make it into that top 100 list. Here's the IMDB list. Star Wars is #20. No Empire.

Really? I have Sith ranked higher, just because it's more dramatic and less corny.

Actually, Empire has more of that corny feel associated with the prequels.

Wut? Are you watching the same movies? What is "corny" in Empire that's even remotely close to the garbage of the prequels? Rank them Star Wars/Empire, Emprie/Star Wars, like Fox said it's splitting hairs. But any ranking without those 2 as 1 and 2 is baffling to me.

That was Fox, but I basically agree with his assessment. I also said Star Wars works better as a stand alone movie. Empire you really need to have seen Star Wars to appreciate. We weren't arguing about Star Wars vs Empire. A few pages back you said Jedi over Empire, sorry, that just doesn't fly.

at first i would have agreed, but over time, I just find Sith a muddled mess. The "plot" makes even less sense than Menace.

I just liked Jedi better as a story. I saw these when they came out, and I really hated being left hanging. Almost everyone I knew felt the same way, though we liked all three. The Ewoks didn't bother me as much as they seem to bother others, and sequences like the Endor speeder chase were exciting.

The aforementioned "laser-brain nerf herder" line, the awkward budding romance between Han and Leia, as well as R2 becoming a bit more of a cutesy comic relief. The whole thing just felt a bit corny at times.

Sure, Empire gives you the often misquoted "Luke, I am your father," but that's about it. Star Wars has a wealth of quotable lines.

Youre either dumb or have a terrible memory. The top 7 quotes here are are all from Empire. Argue the subjectivity of the list if you want but to say "I am your father" is the only line frommEmpire thats quotable is not remotely close to correct.

Sith goes down closer to clones and is well below phantom menace because of what you just said

Phantom menace is far and away the best one of those movies IMO. People really hate on jar jar, but a character like that could've worked if he was toned down.

In the end it's stiff dialogue, technical failings and confusing stories that ruined them, and sith is the mother load of confusing.

I also think jedi is awesome. Don't care what the haters think. It was a great ending to the saga....no loose ends and you get the payoff of seeing Darth Vader without the mask at the end.

Why is that a payoff though?
