Honestly, If I accidentally download it I am still buying the special edition blu ray when it drops. I will be curious as to how Disney handles the Star Wars videos now though, Lucas got bad about dropping a bare bones DVD and then a special edition months after.

Just rewatched the Rey intro. Without saying one word (save for Simon Pegg saying she was receiving a quarter portion, and that would be hard to convey non-verbally), they give us Rey's complete character in 4 minutes. It put you instantly to her side and having great sympathy for her. You know exactly how to approach her and what her hopes and dreams are.
Not even saying anything, she's already a better character than anyone in the prequels. She already passes the Plinkett test without her directly talking to another person. It really seems as it were pulled straight out of a Miyazaki film. That sequence was fricking brilliant.

Hmm I wonder where they got this idea from.....
It's a great scene, but it's borrowed from the original. Like many other things in TFA

It's pretty great, the music in that scene is so perfect

Well, that was part of it, but that was a 30 second sequence and we already got quite a bit of dialog from Luke by that point and knew what he wanted to do. It really just emphasized how much of a dreamer Luke was and how he yearned for something more. I think we were told a lot more than that about Rey's character in that similar sequence.
I think the bigger part of it was trying to be everything the prequels weren't. I guarantee that JJ, Arndt, and Kasden had one thing they agreed on when writing the screenplay: Whenever it can be told without dialog, do it. Lucas, aside from lightsaber duels and over the top special effects, always told and didn't show. All the characters have to make their motivations clear through dialog.
And Miyazaki and Pixar had come out since the original trilogy was released. Both were incredibly effective at this and people took notice. If there is a female character that inspired the creation of Rey, I'm almost sure Nausicaa was the template for the character. Disney highly respects female protagonists and was a good environment for this scene to be born from. It just takes Binary Sunset and goes much further with it (although the imagery wasn't as iconic).

Just pointing out that it wasn't some brilliant never before done scene. I love the scene and it was powerful but let's not get carried away. Her character begins almost exactly as Luke with a few kinks.
I'm not defending the prequels because Lucas did tell far more than show, but it had a few powerful scenes as well. Forgetting Anakin's awful progression to the ark side, Anakin and Padme looking across Corusant before Anakin makes the point of no return was a very powerful scene. No words were said but the emotion was there. Lucas then proceeds to ruin it with Palpy pulling Vader out of his arse

Yeah, but Luke has to bitch a lot before that scene. I agree it's the initial spark, but I bet JJ said, "Let's do Binary Sunset, but do it as if Miyazaki shot the scene." I doubt besides that initial spark they consulted the scene all that much. I think they more dissected these scenes and debated on why they worked:

Binary Sunset is so simple it's brilliant, while the Rey scene I think took a bit more effort. Plus they did something similar with Finn, although it wasn't quite as effective.

I'll give Lucas that, in that was the one time in the entire prequels he did that effectively, but that's really it.

Who can blame Luke for not wanting to dust crops for another season?
They definitely put their spin on the scene in that it's not a carbon copy. But from the setting to the intended emotions felt by the audience, the scene is not much different.
Been so long I can't remember, but I'm sure you're right. He definitely remembered to include dialogue reminding us Anakin and Obi Wan helped Luna Lovegood fight the nargles though

I don't disagree but their situations are a little different. Luke has a speeder and a ship. A home. Parents. Friends. FOOD.
Rey is alone, stranded and destitute. Luke kind of can't leave. Rey really can't leave

The details aren't exactly the same, but it's the same origin story

Yeah, but the only personality trait it seems that Luke and Rey have in common is their dream for something more, but it puts a lot more of Rey's personality into it. It shows that she's fearless, that she has major abandonment issues, that she's starving, barely able to survive, has true hardship, is treated like shite by everyone, doesn't want to die alone, but under it all she's somehow still a true optimist and tries to keep a nice and perky lifestyle when possible. It puts a whole lot more into it than the Binary Sunset did.
And has anyone seen that ridiculous body shaming campaign trying to shame Daisy Ridley for being too skinny? Saying that a real woman has curves? Yeah, go to Uganda and see if those women have curves. It would be utterly ridiculous if Rey wasn't thin as a rail.
Link for anyone who is interested and her comeback to that whale: LINK
