Even though the EU is no longer cannon it is very obvious JJ Abrams wanted to show respect to it. Episode 7 borrowed HEAVILY from the newer Legacy of the Force series.

Ren = Jacen Solo but renamed Ben Solo (so they merged Jacen and Ben Skywalker). In the books, the oldest son of Han turns to the dark side to be defeated in a light saber battle by his twin sister Jaina. It's also interesting that he loses an early light saber battle due to an injury.

Rey = Jaina Solo (but may be the daughter of Luke here essentially taking the place of Ben). This was pretty obvious.

Poe = kinda had the feel of Anakin Solo - greatest pilot in the galaxy with Han's swagger.

Chewey and Han: they "hinted" at Chewey's death when he was shot then flipped it and killed off Han.

The star killer was lifted straight from the EU. The Knights of Ren look to be lifted from the Knights of Revan.

Based on what I've seen going forward I believe they are going to explore two core concepts

1. The ancient sith/Jedi mythology and what it really means to be light and dark leading to the ultimate discovery
2. The unifying force - essentially what Jacen Solo mastered. He came to believe there was no light or dark but it was all the same...mastering all powers and eventually learning to walk through time.

IF Ren takes this route he is going to be BAD arse by episode 9.

I'm sure that's the reason.

Was that sarcasm? Abrams is an admitted fanboy. Why would him dropping some EU mythology as a token of respect be surprising?

Jacen goes through a huge character change after his little brother (Anakin) dies. During this time he is tortured, held captive for a long while during a war. It is then he learns the truth about the force. There is no light or dark side. There is one force and only the truest of masters can master it all. That becomes his obsession - eventually he becomes uber powerful but stays emotionally unbalanced due to all the pain he went through - leading him down the dark side.

I think they will go the opposite direction with Ren: Dark side to unifying force

Because it's more likely that he used it for help instead of paying homage.

killed off Han.

Someone on here predicted well over a month ago that they kill off Han in TFA. as soon as I read that over a month ago I knew they were right. Good call to whoever that was

I hope this is the direction they go, with Ren wanting to become the master of it all, but not being able to and no Jedi or Sith can, only someone who can control their emotions and remain neutral and can finally balance the force like Rey.

I think Rey turns evil but in the end turns back to the light somewhat in order to balance the force and realize that the dark and light are the same or something like that.

Essentially, both Rey and Ren being uber powerful but only Rey being able to control her emotions and become emotionally stable with Ren just failing to control his emotions.

Spoilers of Han dying were out long before that. Actually the entire movie plot was leaked along time ago. So chances are whatever you saw was not a "good call"
