When the first movie came out was it something everyone had been like desperately waiting for and knew it was gonna be awesome or was it more word of mouth after the fact back then?

There was no buildup at all back then. It was late Seventies and was pre-cable tv. No one knew what it was or even who George Lucas was at the time. It became a phenomenon overnight. It was a totally unique experience because nothing like that had ever been seen before.

Magazines and newsletters devoted to sci fi had built it up, but that was pretty much it. My dad still has a few of the magazines.

No. You didn't have social media. The trailers sucked and weren't promoted as they are now. It was SO different from anything before that it caught fire very quickly. Hollywood had to realize it actually had a hit before it pushed it.

Word of mouth definietely helped it after the fact, but there were still hundreds of theaters that were lined up like opening for TFA back for ANH.

And I think it ran well past six months at the theatre.

Word of mouth. No lines around here. Saw it once in the theater then again at the drive-in.

Was nothing like Jaws, where people were lined up from day one.

Sci fi was very niche back then

I was really young for the first one but my sense is it was a massive word of mouth thing.

Elementary school kids started talking more and more and more - eventually the toys started becoming more prevalent and then it was on.

I asked my dad about it. Everyone he knew thought it wasn't going to be that good. Said he saw the trailer and thought it looked terrible.

I can remember that opening scene and being in awe. Never been like that ever again for any movie. Of course I was 10.

a word of mouth thing after the release.

This didn't inspire a bunch of hype

I had never heard of it. My Uncle took me to it saying, "I heard this Star Wars thing is really good."

I saw a trailer for it on a Saturday night on TV. Was totally blown away. I guess I was 13 and begged my parents to drive me to Memphis to see it.(lived in a small town and we didn't get first run movies until 4 to 6 weeks after they opened) Anyway they took me about 2 weeks later.Theatre was almost empty, mom decided to shop at the mall, dad went with me and fell asleep, but it was agreat experience. Also we had a rotory phone. lol

I'm not old enough for it... but my dad is. And he's talked about it extensively. He was 18 and it was right in his wheelhouse. There was no forewarning. But when it was released, it was bigger than anything that had come before it.

I was still a bit too young then, but i do remember the news stories about the lines of people going to see it once the buzz and hype was in full gear.

And the toys, an intense need for the toys.

I was a kid back then; it did have some buildup. We were in a dead space for sci-fi action at the time, I was watching Space 1999 and re-runs of Star Trek and Planet of the Apes. Had a lot of 8 inch action figures and toys for that stuff; it was all we had. (note- the Klingon outfits were very similar to the Gorilla soldier outfit, so those two would usually be on the same 'bad guy' team; and Kirk etc would end up with the sci-fi looking M16's from the Ape series. It was all great fun).

The trailers gave a sense of excitement and anticipation to that crowd, as it looked both exotic and like a WW2 action movie. I kinda thought the Millennium Falcon was a space B-17 bomber going in, after seeing the tailgunning scenes and the shape of the cockpit.

And once it opened, just WOW.
