Baseball was my first love as a kid, and as a child of the 90s, I grew up watching The Sandlot, Field of Dreams, Rookie of the Year, Little Big League, etc. Yet I had never seen Bull Durham until now.

This is most likely an unpopular opinion, but I wasnt impressed. I love the "lollygaggers" scene, but not much else did it for me. Is it just supposed to be a romantic comedy about a pissed of career minor leaguer lusting for some skanky cleat chaser? I get the whole "show the kid the ropes" deal, but I thought Tim Robbins' character was pretty lame and not believable. Oh well.

It never did much for me either. Seems like a product of its time.

Possibly. And maybe it's just nostalgia, but it's neck and neck with Field of Dreams for my fave baseball movie. The mound conversations were classic.

I can see being underwhelmed by the movie as a whole, but Crash Davis is one of my favorite characters in any movie.

I agree with you totally. It wasn't a bad movie, just not special. Not even that memorable. I saw it once, only about 3 years ago, and I'm struggling to even remember much about it.

One of my all time favorite movies. Sure Nuke gets called up......from A ball, but I don't really care. Great movie.

My grandparents owned a store and one of the liquor companies sent movies as one of their promotions I guess. Bull Durham was one of the movies and we literally had 10 copies of it. Being a nosy kid I watched it one night while my parents went to sleep. Needless to say my dad was not impressed by an 8-9 year old telling him, "That was a c*cksucking call," during a Braves game on TBS.

That whole scene is great, especially when Crash had the ump asking him to call him a cocksucker.

Just so I know what kind of guy I'm dealing with, would you say that The Sandlot, Rookie of the Year or Little Big League are better movies than Bull Durham?

Sandlot, yes. The other two, no.

One of the better baseball movies... if nothing else Kevin Costner can do a decent baseball movie...

Sure the Costner rom com parts slow it down, much like Tin Cup, but Bull Durham is just highly quotable.

quote:

Joe Reardon: He walked 18.
Larry: New league record!
Joe Reardon: Struck out 18.
Larry: Another new league record! In addition he hit the sportswriter, the public address announcer, the bull mascot twice...
Larry: Also new league records! But, Joe, this guy's got some serious shite.

The things that Nuke mumbles under his breath on the mound always crack me up.

You don't need a quadraphonic Blaupak...what you need is a curveball.
