Apocalypto
The Passion of the Christ
Braveheart
The Man Without a Face

Most might say Braveheart, which is incredible, Oscar winning, and was huge financial success, but Apocalypto might be an overlooked masterpiece.

I get why most won't say Passion but that was powerful.

Apocalypto is probably his best work, didn't this come out around the time his craziness was made public?

I watched Braveheart in theaters in 1995 and then watched it about 10 times when it first came out on VHS. I have subsequently watched it at least once a year every single year without fail. I just watched it again this past weekend. It gets better every time I see it.

Apocalypto

I remember my girlfriend at the time bitching for about the first 10 minutes because it was all subtitles After that, I didn't hear a peep from her. We were both glued to the screen.

We're married now and have watched it together several times since then. One of our favorite movies and for some reason it still manages to keep us zoned in on it every time.

It's actually a pretty impressive, albeit small, resume for a pretty boy leading actor whose early films were almost dubbed from his thick Australian English into either the Queen's English or American English because you could barely understand him in Gallipoli and Mad Max (yet he still built a major film career on the strength of those performances).

Up until the D&Q/evisceration scenes, Braveheart is the most rewatchable, for sure. Apocalypto is probably his best film, start to finish. During the Cold War, there were slews of films that speculated on what the end of our world would be like.

Apocalypto is a realistic depiction of an actual end to an actual civilization.

His new movie looks really good - Hacksaw Ridge.

The trailer says, "From the Academy Award Winning Director of Braveheart." However, no where in the entire trailer is Mel Gibson's name actually mentioned. They are clearly trying to hide it.

Passion and Apocalypto were both amazing accomplishments considering they were mostly made outside of the Hollywood system. To make hit movies in not just a foreign language, but a dead language, is really impressive.

It was original to me because I did not see that other thread. God forgive someone independently arrive at the same thought.
