the shows aren't really comparable.
I respectively disagree. Elementary would never have existed if not for the international success of Sherlock. CBS created the show to cash in.

I was surprised it took Sherlock that long to break the password.

Lets also have a thread comparing The Godfather to Caddyshack 2. It needs to be sorted out.

I think you are absolutely correct. I mean more the style and type of shows. Sherlock is a true to fashion retelling of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Elementary takes too many liberties in my mind to be adhere to Doyle's story. And to be fair, they all cashed in on the Guy Ritchie movie.

. Episodes 1,3 and 4,6 of Sherlock are pretty awesome.
+1. Basically four really good Sherlock movies. Episodes 2 and 5 are still good just not quite the quality of the other four. Hounds of Baskersville is one of the best Conan Doyle stories, it just doesn't transfer over to screen very well.
Elementary sucks. Just like every other CBS show. Plus, Watson AND moriaty are chicks. Yikes.
My only knock about Sherlock is that Sherlock in the books was not THAT much of a jerk. I've read every book and I think all the short stories, and I'm sorry, he just wasn't. So they are off on that. The Christmas scene with the redhead is painful to watch. He was super super condescending, but not that bad.
One more thing, and it doesn't take away from the episode, but episode one isn't that true to form. Fwiw

Any idea when the new season of Sherlock will be?
Posted on 10/7/13 at 11:27 am to iwyLSUiwy
The Missus watches Elementary (she has a soft spot for those CBS procedural shows) and it's alright. But comparing an alright procedural show against a series of movies starring one of the best actors in the world and written by one of the best TV writers around really isn't fair.

They're filming right now. Supposed to be in January. All the movies they've been in held it back.

I don't care much for Liu's portrayal of Watson or the show's portrayal of Moriarty.
While Sherlock is and always will be the better show, I actually kind of liked that they did something different here. Plus, Natalie Dormer is straight money.

Nathalie Dormer. All. Damn. Day.
I just wish they would have continued the theme of a pseudo intellectual sexual rival like on Sherlock and let her play Irene Adler in a more recurring role.

Sherlock was in development an entire year before the Guy Ritchie movie was released. Sherlock Holmes was released around Christmas 2009. Sherlock premiered in England in the summer of 2010.
Elementary is a direct bi-product of Sherlock.

Sherlock is way way way better. I still like Elementary though. Lucy Lui gives me a boner.
this sums up my thoughts too

I watched the Ritchie Sherlocks but don't care for them. Not a fan of making Sherlock an action hero.
Plus, I've lost all respect for Downey Jr. He was on late night and was asked if Sherlock and Watson had a special relationship, more than just friends. And he goes on to say that basically yea they were gay. That pissed me off. Apparently you do no research on the character you play. Conan Doyle tried to convince a friend of his that was gay that he had some mental disorder and he needed to see a psychiatrist bc of it. You don't make the character you made your career and passion after gay if you don't even think it was a natural feeling towards another. O shocker! A character with no love interest or no desire to have sex! Can't be! Let's assume he's gay. GFY Downey Jr.
Side note: if we're talking truest to form. Jeremy Brett's 80's version is by far the closets.

Sherlock is a great show. Can not hardly wait for the new season.

I'm not necessarily looking for the "truest form", I've read all the books and stories, and seen most of the on screen adaptions that try and stay true to the books. What I'm looking for is a well written show, that is believable(if you accept that Holmes is a super freaky impossible genius), and has plot lines that interest me and can make me think. Two episodes in and Sherlock has that. I'll say a few things though...
SPOILERS through Episode 2 below
The way Watson and Holmes end up together: The looking for a flat mate part makes sense, both odd balls yea ok, even Watson going with Holmes on the first crime scene I understand. Hell saving Holmes from the cabbie I also get, but why would he stick around? He's supposed to be a sensible guy, and regardless of your desire for action, constantly risking your life just for the hell of it with a guy you just met is extremely insensible. I wish they could have found a better method of bringing them together.
The other thing, and it's minor and really only has to do with the first episode, is how did Holmes not figure out it was a cab driver sooner? And how the hell did he not realize who the cabbie at the front was the first time Mrs. Hudson told him there was a cab waiting for him? I mean I figured out the killer was a cab driver when he said the thing about hunting in a crowd and going unnoticed on crowded streets, and he proved in that episode to be a lot smarter than me. And I absolutely realized the cab driver at the front was the killer when Mrs. Hudson came in, honestly I don't know how everyone in the room didn't figure it out, especially when they tracked the phone and it was at their apartment.

I read somewhere that Irene is scheduled to return in future episodes of Sherlock.

I knew as soon as I posted this someone was going to Google the back set chalkboards for dates of filming and development. #M/TV Board problems.

SPOILER!
Right but that's not exactly her character. I wanted a real Irene Adler, not who she turned out to be.
