“We had finished the script and we were given a no-holds-barred memo saying ‘that cannot stand and we’ve changed our minds because, after consulting, we’ve decided that toy won’t sell as well if it’s a female,'” Black added.

Black said many of the female roles were reduced in “Iron Man 3” including Stephanie Szostak’s and Rebecca Hall’s.

Comic-book fans became critical of the film after one of the main villains of the “Iron Man” universe, Mandarin, was revealed to not be main antagonist in a plot twist. Guy Pearce took over the role as the villain, playing scientist Aldrich Killian.

“In the earlier draft, the woman was essentially Killian – and they didn’t want a female Killian, they wanted a male Killian,” Black continued. “I liked the idea, like ‘Remington Steele,’ you think it’s the man but at the end, the woman has been running the whole show. They just said, ‘no way.'”

Black said Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, had nothing to do with the decision and that “we had to change the entire script because of toy making.”

Sounds like a Perlmutter decision...

Hmm. When toy making is causing script changes you have a problem.

It worked pretty well for the original Star Wars trilogy.

I wonder if this was what started Kevin Feige down the road of his eventual ousting of Perlmutter over the CW budget?

Maybe they meant the entire fake Mandarin thing was stupid, since it was stupid.

Concerning Star Wars it seemed it was done a bit more organically. You know you will have crazy bad guys and robots. Might as well make them look cool. Going back and rewriting script soley for the purpose of selling toys is a joke. You just went from making art to making a two hour toy commercial.

Making the Mandarin a red herring for A.I.M. was stupid, I don't care what gender you use.

This.

No one was going to buy an Aldrich Killen action figure OR an "Alicia" Killen action figure.

If they'd had the traditional Mandarin in full costume, THAT would've made for an action figure.

You're right.
I never had a Lea action figure as akid. Don't know anyone who did.

I mean, somewhat in retrospect, but that's only been the case for like 5 months. And that still doesn't make up for replacing the Wookies with the Ewoks.

Should have looked at how well Batman and Robin did.

I am sure I did. If I got good reports, I could get a 5 dollar Star Wars action toy every week. It was soooooo awesome.

I find that to be bullshite seeing as Gwyneth Paltrow is the hero of the entire movie and both more powerful and more brave than Tony the entire movie.

Also:

So they always planed on having the Mandarin be a British drunk pussy actor, and all they did was change the fire breather dipshit from male to female.

quote:

you think it’s the man but at the end, the woman has been running the whole show. They just said, ‘no way.'”

So the writers actually wanted the Mandarin to be an actor controlled by a fire breathing woman who at the end is faught by a fire breathing Gwyneth Paltrow while Tony Stark sat in the corner and cried?

Are they sure they didn't say "no way" referring to the pure stupidity of the twist about the Mandarin and it had nothing to do with male or female?

No wonder Iron Man 3 is the worst superhero movie ever made. The writers were fricking retarded. Who the frick let them in the production in the first place?

"Toy sale concerns" is why Young Justice was cancelled.

And the world has been lesser for it.

I really just had a huge urge to go buy some of these.

I also saw a video of 5 year old me playing with these head scenes.
Used to lose the damn small pieces to these

Having A.I.M. without the classic "beekeeper" outfits was stupid too.

Toy sales are important for most superhero movies/shows, for better or worse.

What the script originally wrote by a woman because that seems like some classic feminist bullshite that you think the man is in charge but hes actually a complete idiot (the Mandarin) and a female is the one in charge. All the while the male hero is a screw up and a female has to step in and save the day setting up a female v female showdown while the worthless men watch on.

Why does it have to be just an act period? Maybe they just wanted the comic book mandarin with no bait and switch regardless of gender? Why was there so much focus on that aspect anyways? The story is there, and they should have focused on properly telling that instead of what fricking gender they were.

I think the shitty ending with pepper potts was female enough for me. Geez what a terrible ending. She gets extremis and becomes essentially a super hero? Dumb.
