Supatiger, I probably know you. Or at least know 50 people you know.

I kept thinking the same thing...
"wait he's an electrician and he's in these meetings with the head honchos and BP guys?"
It was strange and you could almost pinpoint the "Hollywood" scenes they inserted.... Was still a great, gripping, emotional movie though.

Probably it is a big business but a small world
I am a production chemical man, been in the business for twenty years

I had an immune system meltdown as a result of contamination from cleanup in the area, sick for 4 years and 8 months, 100% healthy as of aug 2015.
Going to see it tonight.

About 4 years ago I met a guy who was working on that rig. It blew him out of his bunk.

Just saw it and really enjoyed it.
My biggest pet peeve in movies is accents done badly; if you can't do it, don't try it. Whalberg did fine. Malkovich's accent stood out as particualrly bad. A few others were pretty bad too.
However, in the previews I saw the trailer for Hacksaw Ridge and I think Andrew Garfield's attempt at an Alabama accent may take the prize for the year.

That was my biggest issue with the movie. everybody on that rig knew the moment that well blew. in the movie, it went unnoticed to everybody in living quarters
and it was as if what they needed to do was still up in the air for half the movie.. the evacuation would've never taken that long. I'd have been in the water as soon as I had a life preserver

I enjoyed the movie alot too, but afterwards I had friends telling me Mike williams was nowhere near competent as they portrayed
Check out this guys posts.. the real Mike Williams was nothing like the character

I liked how they kept referring to the ESD system as EDS. Nit picky I know. Overall it was very good though.

He legitimately sounds retarded in that trailer... It was like some strange combo of a bad Scarlett O'Hara and Jonathan "I don't want your life" Moxon...
I don't get it... Just have these actors with Sling Blade over and over... THOSE are actual southern accents.

(shear Rams hitting a drill pipe coupling)
I worked in the Blow Out Preventer (BOP) area at the time of the Deep Horizon tragedy.
It is sad but true that the design specs on shear ram pressure never took into consideration the possibility of a coupling getting lodged exactly where the shear rams are.
You should have seen the massive beefing up of BOP specs after the DWH tragedy. It was like learning the entire job over again.

I thought jumping into the drink with a preserver was the last option. Especially at night.

I honestly don't know how they jumped 80ft off the heliport deck into the water with a vest on and lived
Amazing

Someone correct me if I am wrong but:
ESD is the emergency shut-in system and is primarily on production rigs, seen many of them and only seen it hit once when we had a leaking packer on an old well that was leaking gas on the platform and gas detectors were going off. The ESD would shut down the generators and bring the platform "down to the ground" meaning all systems shut down and the well actuators would close the main valves on each tree
EDS is the emergency disconnect system and is a feature of floater rigs to break away from the drill riser so they can drive the ship away
