people on the internet have been making fun of that scene for decades.

I think SNL sucks hard but I don't really think this is some grand joke stealing conspiracy at play here.

I agree to the point that it's not an original idea, but the timing is what makes it suspicious. literally the next available show they run the same skit about a 40 year old movie.

tv writers have been doing this for years. before the internet they would go to stand up clubs and rip material. they're under a lot of pressure to come up with ideas and they're on a schedule to do so.

I think they lifted it.

So you think this is not an original idea and has been joked about before but that they used the first available opportunity to steal this one? Wouldn't it make more sense to sit on that joke/premise for a while and then say it's a common premise?

Sure it is. It comes up here all the time, almost as much as how much Daniel is the true villain of Karate Kid. It even has an entry on Know Your Meme:

Rome would go on a similar rant on June 18th, 2015.

yeah I know, it's the timing...(and the musical number)

it's stone cold. one of their writers saw this and wrote their skit.

I thought that was a bad skit because I have heard that joke a long time ago. I don't think it was stealing from Screen Junkies I just think it was lazy writing.

Aside from both being about Willie Wonka and pointing out that Grandpa is a mooching shite (like has been done for years in various shows and media) they aren't really similar at all. Also not sure why you'd think it's a sign of theft to do a music bit for a movie that happens to be a musical. Sorry, I rule in favor of the accused.

the timing and the way the skit was done...and the reputation of tv writers for stealing (well deserved too) lead me to believe it was stolen

I have no doubt one of their writers saw the honest trailer, and then pitched the skit based on that

How's it stolen though? Not everyone watches honest trailers. Millions didn't see it. By SNL doing it millions did get to see it. No different than when someone posts stuff from Reddit here. Not everyone reads Reddit.

When that skit came on, I swore to my wife that someone had done that skit before. Either Family Guy or Robot Chicken or somebody... I know I've seen it done before.

I mean I had never seen this honest trailer you are referencing and I knew immediately what joke they were going to go with. It was just a lazy skit. And I guess a lazy honest trailer too.

It's honest trailers, not some obscure channel no one has ever seen.

I sincerely doubt they stole the bit.

If you see someone do something and copy it that's stealing. If they came up with the idea independently as many have then it is not

It's not really all that different from a math test. A lot of people came up with the same answer but if you did it by looking at someone else's work, you're a cheater

You've probably seen references to Grandpa Joe being a shite b/c it's one of the more obvious jokes to make about the movie. Plus the movie has been referenced by shows like the Simpsons, South Park, American Dad, Family Guy, and even SNL constantly over the years. LINK
