A news report out of Detroit has a few big bits of information about Zack Snyder‘s Batman v Superman, and the biggest report is that a character long-speculated about will finally appear in the film. According to a local reporter, Robin will make an appearance. And in keeping with the influence from Frank Miller’s Batman story The Dark Knight Returns, the Batman v Superman Robin will be female.

Those who’ve been following along with Batman v Superman rumors probably know where this is going, but we’ll keep the real info after the jump for those who want to avoid detailed spoilers.

Rumors have flown for a couple weeks that Jena Malone is in Batman v Superman, and that she would play Robin. That talk started when she was spotted on set, though the idea of the Sucker Punch alum visiting a Zack Snyder set isn’t all that outlandish, and not necessarily indicative of anything. Then she posted an Instagram shot showing red-dyed hair (seen also in her NYFF appearance for Inherent Vice) with a caption saying “Drastic times call for drastic measures.”

Makes sense given that The Dark Knight Returns is apparently a big influence.

Not surprising.

A little old though? A good choice, but I'm not sure what their long term goal would be.

Dick Grayson is way to good for this universe anyways.

I have been very anti DC, but I'm fine with this.

That's cool. I like this idea. It plays heavily on the Dark Knight Returns and I think it'll add a cool element to the movie.

It also offers the possibility if having Nightwing at some point.

The rumor is based entirely on Malone dying her hair red and taking a picture of it on instagram, and visiting the set.

There's no basis in reality.

However, at one point in the comics, Robin was female.

Better casting choice than The Flash or Lex Luthor or Wonder Woman

How many more characters can they possible cram in this film? I understand it'll probably be like a 30 second cameo, but we get it, do they really need to introduce every DC character in one movie?

actually there's several reports that an extra is breaking his confidentiality agreement and spilled the beans to a reporter.

They need to wean themselves from Frank Miller's tit.

Ok. I've seen it a couple of times, but I don't get the reference. Make me feel stupid and tell me please.

And it makes no fricking sense. I really don't give a shite that Robin is a female, but it just becomes more and more clear by the day that Snyder and Goyer don't have a clue on why that graphic novel is so popular. I really think the most they've thought through it is that it's the most popular Batman comic, people have wanted a live action adaptation of it for a while, and Batman fights Superman in it. Any person who even remotely understands that comic would know that it's just about the worst good Batman comic arc you can do to start Batman off.

Seen it? Are you sure you're not thinking of "The Dark Knight Rises"? It would be just about impossible to forget The Dark Knight Returns' version of Robin if you've read it.
