Three Real World/Road Rules/Challenge deaths from 1992 to October 2014 (and one was the guy who was dying of AIDS during his season) and two in one month.

Diem's was unfortunately expected based on the media reports coming out since she collapsed in Panama and her cancer came back faster than ever. This is certainly unexpected, but Frank basically called out Knight for being a hardcore drug addict on that now-deleted Grantland podcast, plus during the Rivals II reunion in slightly coded language.

TMZ says he overdosed on pills after a fun night of partying, which is basically exactly how I would have expected him to die. Zach's tweet kind of says the same thing

quote:

You lived your life in the fast lane, and your smile was contagious. My bunkmate, my buddy. Rest easy pal, I'll miss you.

Is he on the next Challenge? If so, MTV must be creaming their panties.

ETA: And it's been more than 3 deaths: Pedro, Joey Kovar (drug OD), Frankie (Cystic Fibrosis), Diem, Knight.

I guess that's it.

This really sucks. I was so bummed when he wasn't allowed to go on the last Challenge for slapping Frank in the face during the reunion show.

I forgot Joey. It was Pedro (AIDS), Michelle Parma (car accident), Frankie (Cystic Fibrosis), and Joey Kovar (overdose).

Then Diem and Knight.

Three of them were pure medical reasons, and MTV probably knew Pedro was going to die within a year or two when they cast him. A cynic could say that's why they cast him. Frankie's wasn't as inevitable, but let's be serious, someone with cystic fibrosis who smokes cigarettes isn't long for the world.

And the two guys with notable substance abuse issues before they were cast (Knight and Joey) unsurprisingly did not keep up with their sobriety when fame came around.

It is interesting to note that guys like Wes and Bananas were saying that there was much less partying and steroid use going on in recent seasons than in the Fresh Meat I-Ruins era, but Knight was definitely the exception to the rule when it came to partying. Guy sounded like he was on xanax in every interview he gave.

And yeah, he was on Battle of the Exes II with Jemmye. It's going to be really weird to show him. With Diem, she was on the show for just a few days, and her battle with cancer was actually inspiring. This is just awkward. Not Ryan Jenkins winning I Love Money awkward, but still. I bet he was eliminated fairly early on though, as there were lots of good teams.

Another one bites the dust. Reality stars are fast living people. Many tend to die young as s result.

I hope they don't go back and edit him to try and keep him in a good light. That would make him boring.

Knight was the most funny when he was being controversial i.e. pantomiming Marlon sucking dick and throwing ketchup on Jemmye (who is apparently terrified of ketchup for those who don't know)

I doubt they'll edit anything unless it was really bad. Like far worse than anything he's ever done. They'll just frame it as him being a guy who jokes a lot and sometimes crosses the line but just wanted to have fun.

I imagine they will have some sort of anti-drug thing as well with either the more straight-laced people talking about the dangers of drugs or maybe one of the cast members who did drugs in the past talking about the difficulty of getting clean (I have no idea who that would really be).

I hope so.

I still have to decide on a new favorite during the next season though

screw the cynics

that San Fran year was probably the most important season of reality TV ever made.

it a did a ton of good by showing that people with AIDS are not some sort of scary thing that must be avoided like the plague.

Im fairly certain you sell your soul when you join that show. The past actors dying recently is just the result of the devil collecting whats due.

That's because the producers don't allow it anymore. They used to have unlimited access to alcohol and could go out anytime they wanted. Now they are pretty much stuck in the house 24/7. Big reason why they have a lot of trouble getting some of the older people to come back.

Drugs are banned but fighting is allowed. Fair trade I guess.

1994 was a different world. Do you not remember how HIV/AIDS was viewed by most back then? The stigma was massive and Pedro did a lot to show young viewers that you didn't have to be scared of people with it. I really think that Pedro did more to remove much of that stigma than anyone other than Magic Johnson by simply living his life to the fullest on what is normally an escapist reality show.

Maybe. I liked the Real World - didn't love it, liked it.

It all has that reality stink on it now,and of course, shows like that aren't going to age well. But they're very cost effective.

Now, with the merger of true reality television and the gameshow (also a cost effective product, extremely popular with the "suits"), it will remain a dominant form of television for the foreseeable future. There are so many channels with so much demand for content that anything that is barely watchable will make it somewhere.

I find it tough to believe that shows can still get cancelled - I mean they're willing to make it - somebody has to be out there wanting to fill time, right?

This douche (RIP):

Decided to drink/drug himself to death and went out by aspiration.

Again, famous for being famous (but obviously, not really) and partied too hard. Same old story. Party. Party hard, but not too hard, because that can kill you (as it did this douche - RIP).

Who's idea was it to cast a drug addict on a show set in New Orleans?

That's like an alcoholic working at a bar.
