No sooner had a posted about a show concerning King Arthur and his legend I find out that Nigel Terry, who played King Arthur in the movie Excalibur (1981), had just passed away at the age of 69. If you haven't seen the aforementioned film, I strongly recommend you do. It features a very young Liam Neeson playing one of the Knights of the Round Table as well as an in-her-prime Helen Mirren, who plays the evil sorceress Morgana.

Saw that Facebook tonight. The land is without a king!

Aside from Excalibur, he was also great as a young John in Lion in Winter.

I watched that movie to death when I was in college. It was in heavy rotation on The Movie Channel, along with Diner back in '83. Just a perfect little movie, packed with amazing actors.

The next time that I saw Nigel Terry he was on Murder She Wrote or something. I thought, "Ah shite, his movie career didn't last."

Gabriel Byrne was Uther.

That movie was full of cats that the U.S. movie audience hadn't seen before - at least not in a major role - Stewart, Neeson and Byrne, most notably (Nicol Williamson - Merlin - and Mirren were probably the biggest names for the U.S. market when Excalibur was released).

I'm guessing that the bulk of these actors were up an coming stage actors in Britain at the time. I hadn't seen the few movies that Nicol Williamson had been in and had no idea who Helen Mirren was.

People talk about Dazed and Confused and American Graffiti launching a bunch of unknown actors. This movie was packed with future stars.

Excalibur is one of my top ten favorite movies. So very quotable and epic.

"A king without a sword! A land without a king!"

"I was never meant to live a man's life but to be the stuff of future memory."

"I have often thought that in the hereafter of our lives, when I owe no more to the future and can be just a man, that we may meet, and you will come to me and claim me as yours, and know that I am your husband. It is a dream I have..."

Grail Figure: What is the secret of the Grail? Who does it serve?
Perceval: You, my lord.
Grail Figure: Who am I?
Perceval: You are my lord and king. You are Arthur.
Grail Figure: Have you found the secret that I have lost?
Perceval: Yes. You and the land are one.

"Ready my knights for battle. They will ride with their king once more. I have lived through others for far too long. Lancelot carried my honor, and Guenevere, my guilt. Mordred bears my sins. My knights have fought my causes. Now, my brother, I shall be... king."

Basically every line of this movie is epic.

Nicol Williamson and Helen Mirren could not stand each other. How Borman got those two to work together is a big credit to him.

The scene where Arthur stops mid-battle and hands his sword to his enemy so that he can knight Arthur and fight him as an equal... gives me chills every time.

quote:

In the name of God, St Michael and St George, I give you the right to bear arms and the power to mete justice.

That duty I will solemnly obey, as knight and king.

Rise... King Arthur.
I am your humble knight, and I swear allegiance to the courage in your veins. So strong it is, its source must be Uther Pendragon's. I doubt you no more.

He was pretty good in A Lion In Winter as bumbling Prince John. He along with Anthony Hopkins had their screen debut in it.

I read that is why he cast them in those parts. He thought the tension between them would work well on screen.
